    Golding uses the symbol of savagery in Lord of the Flies to represent the two competing instincts within human beings - the civilizing instinct and the savage instinct. His experience in WWII showed him the real violence and brutality that exists in humanity. The symbol suggests that civilization provides an outlet for our innate savage impulses. On the island, without societal structure, the boys slowly regress into savagery as seen in their increasing violence and lack of order. The fire going out and ship passing by further removes them from civilization and pushes them into a more primitive state.

    Goldings experience in WWII had an effect on his views of humanity and evils of the society Goldings experience with the real-life violence and realbrutality of WWII To suggest that one of the important functions of civilized society is to provide an outlet for the savage impulses that reside inside each individual
