SPSS COURSE SYLLABUS 2005-6 This course will teach the students how to use the SPSS statistical

software when carrying out a research. The students will learn how to enter the data into SPSS, to use data editing tools in SPSS, to analyze the data using statistical procedures, and to create graphical presentations. The main subjects covered by this course are: Data files: 1. Entering data, variable types, variable labels, value labels, missing values. 2. Transforming data and creating new variables: recode, compute, count. 3. File manipulations: sort file, split file, select cases, merge files. 4. Drawing random samples. 5. Basic descriptive statistics: descriptive, frequencies, explore, crosstabs. 6. Graphs : histogram, error bar, box-plot, bar chart, scatter etc. 7. Reading data into SPSS data files from outer sources: excel files & text files. 8. Advanced statistical procedures such as: t-test, Chi-square, regression etc. Syntax files: Creating, editing and running procedures from the syntax file. Output files: 1. Creating and editing output files. 2. Saving output files in WORD. REQUIERMENTS OF THE COURSE: Students must hand in all exercises given and no later than one week following the time they were given. The exercises will not be graded but will be corrected. There will be two "take home" exams which will be graded, one in the middle of the course and one at the end of the course. The final grade of the SPSS course will be a weighted average of the two exams (1/3 the first exam and 2/3 the final exam).
