The student's project aims to raise awareness about human trafficking. They chose this topic because it interests them and presents a challenge. Originally, the student wanted to create an art exhibition, but felt it was too trivial, so they decided to combine raising awareness with art. The student was previously unaware of human trafficking, but became interested after seeing awareness efforts by the band The Killers. They want to help make a change against this global problem. The project involves writing an essay and exhibition, fitting the IB approaches of human ingenuity and community and service. The student plans to interview UN representatives and correspond with anti-trafficking groups.

The goal of my project is Can I raise awareness on Human trafficking?. The reason I chose this project is simple. I wanted to do something that interests me but challenges me at the same time. My original idea was to create an art exhibition, but I thought it would be too trivial so I opted for something else. In the end I then decided to try combine the two. Nowadays in nearly every single paper, every single day, one finds an article on Human trafficking. A year ago, I sadly have to admit that I had no idea about Human trafficking. I had no idea that such a thing is happening in the world. In the society we live in. I started to notice that the topic was everywhere on the Television, on the radio and in the papers. My inspiration came from a music video by an indie rock band called The Killers. The video was created to raise awareness on Human trafficking. They were helping to make a change and I really admired that. I decided to help make a change no matter how small, because human trafficking is a global problem and its happening everywhere in the world. Approaches to learning: Since I will be writing an essay and raising awareness the project will fall under the following categories: Human Ingenuity and Community and Service. It fits under Human Ingenuity because I am creating something, it also fits under Community and Service because I am doing something that will benefit others, I am increasing my awareness of individuals and groups both international and national, I am also taking responsibility and doing something for my community. I intend to contact the United Nations and ask them if it would be possible for me to interview them. If possible I would video tape it and use it as a background in a contemporary/modern type art exhibition. I would also be happy to correspond with other organizations such as the Womens group in Geneva that is fighting against trafficking. I have already send out some letters to organizations and am hoping for some feedback soon. I already have two replies. I have collected some information about trafficking from the internet and from the public library in forms of videos, presentations, books and magazines. I intend to contact the U.N before December 16th so that I may evaluate the outcome in my Personal Statement.
