Plan of Investigation
1
My group’s theme is ‘Social Issues in Jamaica’. My individual topic is ‘Human

Trafficking in Jamaica’. The reason I chose Human Trafficking in is because it is a social issue

with recent flare-ups in Jamaica. It has impacted many lives including those of children in my

community, thus leading to me researching this topic for my English SBA.

As a student of English I am expecting to improve my interests in reading, to expand on

my vocabulary and to improve my public speaking capabilities. I will source my artefacts from

newspaper articles, news reports and songs that speak on Human Trafficking.

Reflection 1

2
My first artefact is a gleaner article published on the 13th of May 2019 titled, “Human

Trafficking a Major Concern for All Countries”. It starts by giving an estimate of the number of

human trafficking victims and the varying percentages for each type of human trafficking that

was observed. This article provides statistics related to the amount of people that are trafficked in

Jamaica as well as the medium used to recruit the victims.

My second artefact is a YouTube song titled “Hands of Danger'', this song features

famous artists such as Tessanne Chin and Sizzla. It describes how human trafficking affects the

lives of the victim’s family members and their communities. This artefact lamented how serious

of an issue human trafficking is as well as how widely recognized it is in Jamaica and how

detrimental it is to the country.

My third artefact is a YouTube video posted by RBN news, it gives insight on a gleaner

article titled, “Trafficked Teen Attempted Suicide Sixteen Times After Being Rescued”.  The

video speaks on the effects of human trafficking on the victims, the penalties for being associated

with human trafficking as well as an insight into what a victim of human trafficking endures.

This artefact allows me to realize the extent to which human trafficking affects the victims

mentally and physically.

Reflection 2

3
In my first artefact, the gleaner article on human trafficking, the information is written in

Standard English. The use of quotations and metaphors to present the information allows for the

reader to easily understand what the writer is trying to convey. The article is descriptive,

informative and gives detailed information on what the writer discovers after researching and

observing his country and the world. While reading this article I can tell that the writer's tone is

one of concern, concern for the numbers of victims there are and concern for how widespread the

issue is, as a reader I feel uneasy as I read this article, as I now have a general idea of the amount

of people being trafficked in my country.

My second artefact, the YouTube song on human trafficking uses the Jamaican Patois.

This artefact contains rhymes, rhythm, similes, rhetorical questions and repetitions, which are

used to convey the information to the listeners. The artists have an imploring and angry tone,

shown in the chorus and a few of the verses where they plead with the people to stop taking

away the children, this song makes me feel sad and also concerned for the children in my country

that are victims of human trafficking.

My third artefact, the YouTube video that speaks on a gleaner article that was published

uses the Standard English. It contains languages such as quotations, imageries and dialogues,

these languages allow for the listeners to get a clearer understanding of what the speaker is trying

to explain in the video. The tone of the speaker is calm, as he tells the story of a young girl who

was trafficked. While listening to this video I felt repulsed by the people who were responsible

for what happened to the young girl, and sympathetic towards her as she had to endure a lot of

suffering.

4
Reflection 3

5
My first artefact, the Newspaper Article on human trafficking urged me to do some self

reflection. The article provided me with ways to address the key issues and gave me information

on one of the strategies that human traffickers use to recruit their victims. Due to this article I

gained a sense of selflessness as I am trying to get the word out to as many people in my

community, so to minimize the number of persons that could become victims due to ignorance.

My second artefact, the YouTube song on human trafficking expresses the sentiment of

the people for the children who are victims of human trafficking as well as the pain the families

are subjected to endure. After listening to this artefact I have become more empathetic and

sensitive towards the victims and their families.

My third artefact the YouTube video about the gleaner article gave a touching story of a

girl who was a victim of human trafficking. After watching the video I am now motivated to help

those who were once subject to human trafficking, as I now understand the physical and mental

pain they are subject to.

WRITTEN REPORT

Collectively, the members of this group decided on the topic, “Social Issues in Jamaica”. This

topic was chosen due to the sexual, financial, mental and physical impact it has on the citizens of

Jamaica whether it be directly or indirectly. From this topic, four subtopics were derived these

include,” Child Abuse in Jamaica”, ”White Collar Crimes in Jamaica”, “Human Trafficking in

Jamaica” and “Sexually Transmitted Diseases in Jamaica”

The three artefacts that best suited the topic were: “Taking precautions against STDs” by

Television Jamaica, “Child Abuse – We Must Stop” by Jamaica Gleaner and What Recovery

Looks Like For A Sexual Abuse Survivor In Jamaica” by UNICEF.

Artefact one features two individuals from an organization who speak about the reasons as to

why individuals contract STDs. This video was very straightforward and as a result, made it

clear the reasons why people contact STDs and furthermore, how to prevent contracting them.

Artefact two encompasses the ways in which child abuse is presented, the effects of child abuse

on our nation and ways to eradicate child abuse. Artefact three was about a woman that was

raped by her stepdad at the age of nine years old and due to the slow response from law

enforcers, he escaped trial. This young lady used her experience to reinforce the essential

principles to her daughter. Her resilience is immensely commendable as she is now an advocate

for young females’ who have had similar experiences.

The materials that aided in this research were collected via the internet, then discussed, typed and

reviewed using the different Google Software. There were many challenges collecting the

11
research materials; these include situations where information was difficult to find, and where

members of the group were unable to participate in the group discussions due to circumstances

beyond their control. We overcame these challenges by seeking assistance from our teacher and

scheduling suitable dates for our group discussions. This research has impacted the group

members positively; it has enhanced our knowledge and understanding of the social issues and

also helped us to remove the stigma attached to social issues allowing for us to see it in a

different perspective.
