ADDITIONAL INTRODUCTORY NOTES BY SRI V.SATHAKOPAN
Lakshmi Tantram is one of the PaancarAtra Aagama texts. As the name
suggests, it is about MahA Lakshmi. Here eulogy is made to MahA Lakshmi as
being equivalent in Vaibhavam to Her Lord in every way. In the 50th chapter of
the 57 chaptered Sri Sookthi, the meanings of Purusha and SrI Sooktham are
explained well. One of the most striking things about this SrI Sookthi is that

MahA Lakshmi Herself performs upadEsams for us directly.
Though some scholars have earlier published a study of this Text, there has not
been much of a detailed study of this important PaancarAtra Aagama Text in
Tamil. As we venture to provide more information about this SrI Sookthi, we
seek the blessings of the divya dampathis of Srirangam for success in our
efforts. A bibliography of work by other authors on this text is provided at
the end, as reference for further study.
There are two VaishNavite AagamAs: PaancarAtram and VaikhAnasam.
PaancarAtram has many source books. AagamAs have their roots in the VedAs
(NigamAs). AagamAs deal with the worship of the deities, the rules for the
construction, consecration and the repair of the temples, the sculpting of the
deities, the daily AarAdhanam procedures for the consecrated deities, the
conductance of the various uthsavams of the temple, drawing of the yantrAs.
AagamAs deal with four topics:
Charyai dealing with devotees duties
KriyA covers the different aspects of the temple and details on temple
worship
Yogam deals with the different ways of meditation and how the soul of the
devotee gets closer to the deity and
Jn~Anam relates to the state of one in meditation.
Each AagamA text emphasizes one or more of the four topics. Lakshmi Tantram
deals exclusively with ways to worship MahA Lakshmi and Her relationship with
Her Lord. We come across the word Tantram in this Aagama text. Tantra has
to be understood here as dealing with the details of the Saadhana (practice) of
UpAsanA. In this context, Tantra has been defined as "that which gives a lot of
attainments with meaningful practices and that which ultimately leads to
emancipation (Brahma PrApti/Moksham)".
Among PaancarAtra samhithAs, the well known ones are Padma, Saathvatha,

Aagamam to establish it as an authentic PramANam based on yEkAyana branch
(Saakha) of Vedam.
Sri Lakshmi Tantram is an extraordinary PaancarAtra Aagamam in that it has
direct upadEsams for us from Lakshmi Devi Herself. This SrI Sookthi has 57
chapters and has 3163 slOkams housed therein. Two chapters are extinct
(luptham) now. Some of the chapters like Lakshmi Mantra Siddhi with 40
slOkams, SrI Sooktha Prabhava PrakAsa: with 137 slOkams, Lakshmi Svaroopa
PrakAsa:, Mantra svaroopa Kathanam, BhUtha Suddhi PrakAsa:, DeekshA
abhishEka prakAsa: and others offer precious insights into UpAsanaa of MahA
Laskhmi personifying yeka Seshithva Tatthvam. Let us seek Her anugraham to
worship Her in the traditional way following Her own guidance!
We will commence our kaimkaryam of writing about Lakshmi Tantram with Her

adiyEn salutes that Vasthu (Brahman), which is the soul of Lakshmi as well as
NarAyaNan. This Vasthu is most sacred, blemishless, changeless and is the
embodiment of Jn~Anam. The question arises now as to the existence of a
superior Vasthu that is soul to both NarayaNa and Lakshmi. The answer is given
later as that Vasthu being one and the same as Sriman NarAyaNan. Brahma
Soothrams 3.2.20 to 3.2.36 covers this topic (Sundara Simham Book 60 and Sri
BhAshyam section of NamperumAL Vijayam: www.namperumal.com).

adiyEn worships the subhASrayam of Lakshmi, who is the embodiment of
Compassion and is seated on Garudan with Her Lord. She is worshipped by
Soman and is like the integrated essence of the blemishless Chandran-Sooryan
and Agni. "tat lakshmI roopam upAsmahE" is the key message and the
description of that roopam is described by words like "khagAsanam,
ghruNaadhAram, soma bhUshitam and akaLanga indu-soorya-agnim".
She is generally visualized as being seated with Her Lord on the divine bird
Garudan, which serves as Their vaahanam. The bird referred to here could also
be the Owl as per the traditions of northern part of India, where the wise bird
owl is considered as Her transport.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS BY VS:
Sage Athri or Athri Rishi is a Vedic seer. The pravarAs of Athri are known as
AathrEyAs. The different sUthrakArAs given the pravarAs (denoting one or
more reputed ancestors of this line) are BhaudhAyana, KathyAyana,
Aapasthambha and LougAkshi. There are 407 Rishis, who are mantra dhrushtAs
for Rg Veda Mantrams. Sage Athri and his descendants are some of them.
While the rishis linked to the first and the three last books of Rg Vedam (8th,
9th and 10th) are miscellaneous, the other books (2nd to 7th) have specific
rishis attributed to them. For instance, the fifth book is associated with Sage
Athri and his sons just as the 2nd book is linked to Angiras, the 3rd book to
VisvAmitrA, The 4th book to VaamadEva, the 6th book to BhAradhvAja and the
7th to VaisishtA and his descendants.

Sri Lakshmi Tantram is structured as a conversation between Sage Athri and
his dharma pathni, AnasooyA, who desired to know about the glories of MahA
Lakshmi and the tatthvams associated with Her. Sage Athri is very pleased
with his dear wifes request and uses Sage Naaradhars description of the
Vaibhavam of MahA Lakshmi as told in the Saathva Samhithai of PaancarAtram.

Saasthram. He is totally dispassionate and as one who unfailingly pursues true

The chapter 2 of Patanjalis Yoga sUtrA named Saadhanaa Paadha discusses at
least 11 of the 14 angams. The 8 of the 14 constitute the familiar ashtAnga

There was once an asurA, who tried to pierce and destroy the Sun through his
shadow. Sage Athri entered into the state of tapas (penance) to destroy that
asurA by the name of SvarbhAnu as referred to in Rg Vedam. Sage Athri is the
embodiment of tapas. He is radiant with the power of his tapas. Such is the
glory of Sage Athri.

Sage Athri is ThriguNAdhithar. He is beyond the three guNams: Satthva, Rajas
and tamas. Hence, he is known as Athri, unaffected by the three guNams
(thriguNam). He has also transcended the three goals of life: Dharma-artha-
kAmam. He is eternal as a Vedic Rishi (mantra drashTA). He unfailingly
observes nithyAnushtAnams and is always engaged in agni kaaryams prescribed
for a Gruhasthan.

After describing the glories of Sage Athri, this slOkam salutes the vaibhavam
of AnasooyA, the wife of Athri known for her chastity and fidelity. Once the
wives of Brahma, VishNu and Siva became jealous (filled with asooyai) about her
chastity and wanted their husbands to test it. The husbands arrived at Sage
Athris Aasramam and requested Bikshai (food). They however insisted that
Anasooyai should serve the food without wearing any clothes. Anasooyai took
consecrated water and sprinkled on them. They became tiny infants as a result
and Anasooyai could now nurture them as helpless babies. The wives of the
three Gods now got upset and begged Anasooyai to unite them back with their
husbands. Anasooyai consented and converted them back to their erstwhile
forms and returned them to their worried wives. Before returning to their
homes, the three Gods lent portion of their power to create a son for Sage
Athri and Anasooya named the child, DattAtrEyA, with three heads
This slOkam says: Anasooya is the fittest among women to be a wife. She is the
supreme among the chaste women (PativratAnAm paramA). She is the dharma
Pathnee of Sage Athri and has immense Yasas (fame) as a Pathivrathai. She
attained the status of a Mother for the three gods (Brahma-VishNu-Sivan) at
one time, when they tried to test Her Chastity.

Once upon a time, Indra was the object of a curse by the offended Sage
DurvAsA. As a result, Indran could not recite the VedAs or perform Yajn~ams.
This led to supreme loss for the people of the three worlds, who could no longer
benefit from the auspicious glances of MahA Lakshmi.
DurvAsA is a sage who is known to get angry fast. Once he was returning from
Sri Vaikuntam after worshipping MahA Lakshmi there. The divine consort of
the Lord blessed DurvAsA with a garland that she had worn. DurvAsA carried
that precious gift on his head and met Indra traveling on his royal elephant.
Sage DurvAsA presented the garland of MahA Lakshmi to Indran, who in turn
placed it on the neck of his elephant. That elephant took the garland worn by
MahA Lakshmi with its trunk and crushed it under its foot. Sage DurvAsA was
mighty offended with the rudeness of Indra and cursed him to lose all his

Indran folded both his palms and with anjali mudhrA, recited SrI Sooktham and
other stutis associated with MahA Lakshmi. The lotus-born queen of the Lord,
who once punished the offending Paakan was immensely pleased with the
reverential stutis of Indran.
