Psy 308 Fall 2010 Chapter 2 Part 2 Review Vocabulary: electrode, microelectrode, membrane potential, oscilloscope, resting potential,

depolarization, hyperpolarization, action potential, threshold of excitation, diffusion, electrolyte, ion, electrostatic pressure, intracellular fluid, extracellular fluid, sodiumpotassium transporter, sodium-potassium pump, ion channel, voltage-dependent ion channel, all-or-none law, rate law, salutatory conduction

Reflexes:
What is the reflex arc? What neuron detects pain? What neuron tells the muscles to contract? Explain both functions of the interneuron?

Resting and Action Potential:

What ions are released and in what order during an action potential? What are the numerical values for resting potential, threshold of excitation? When does hyperpolarization and depolarization occur? Draw a cross section of the cell, the ions in highest concentration, and how the forces of diffusion and electrostatic pressure affect each ion: Na+, Cl-, K+, Anions.

How does the force of electrostatic pressure affect each ion? Explain how the sodium potassium pump/transporter works? Explain: saltatory conduction, the all or none law, and the rate law.
