y Inhibits the enzyme carbonic anhydrase. This action decreases aqueous humor formation in the eye, IOP, and hydrogen ion secretion by retinal tubule cells, and increases sodium, potassium, bicarbonate and water excretion by the kidney, causing a dieutic effect. This drug was given to patient possibly due to adjunctive treatment of chronic openglaucoma, secondary to glaucoma and pre-operative use in acute angle closure glaucoma when delay of surgery is desired to lower IOP. y y y y y y y Fluid or electrolyte imbalance Renal disease Hepatic Disease Adrenocortical insufficiency Respiratory acidosis, COPD Lactation GI: nausea, anorexia, vomiting, constipation, melena, hepatic insufficiency GU: hematuria, Use cautiously with: y Hypersensitivity CNS: dizziness, fatigue, weakness, transient myopia, drowsiness y Possible contraindications are: Other possible adverse effects are: y y Patient has no contraindication to drug.
