Countee Cullen was born in 1903 and adopted by Reverend F.A. Cullen in 1918 after his grandmother died. He attended New York University from 1921-1925 where he published works. In 1929, he published The Black Christ and Other Poems and divorced in 1930. He worked as a French teacher until his death in 1946.
