CivE 127: Statics and Solid Mechanics 1

Midterm Examination Date: 3:30 pm5:30 pm, Tuesday, February 15, 2011 Instructor: Professor Wei-Chau Xie Important Notes: One page (letter size, one-sided) of formula sheet is allowed. Calculators are allowed. Answer all three questions. The bonus problem is added on top of your total marks. 1. (10 Marks) An exhaust system for a pickup truck is shown in the gure. The weights of the headpipe, mufer, and tailpipe are Wh = 10 N, Wm = 100 N, Wt = 50 N, respectively, and act at the indicated points. If the exhaust pipe hanger at point A is adjusted so that its tension FA = 50 N, determine the required forces FB , FC , and FD in the hangers at points B, C, and D so that the force-couple system at point O is zero.

3. (10 Marks) Consider the structure shown in the following gure, in which all connections are pins. Neglect the weights of all members. Given that P1 = 500 N, P2 = 2000 N, and M = 500 N m, (1) Determine the reactions at support A. (2) Determine the reactions at support C. (3) Determine the force supported by the pin at B.
