Practice Problem Set 1 (Simple Stress)

1. A hollow steel tube with an inside diameter of 100 mm must carry a tensile load
of 400 kN. Determine the outside diameter of the tube if the stress is limited
to
120 MN/m2.

Solution:

P =σA
where:
P=400kN=400000N
σ=120MPa
A=14πD2−14π(1002)
A=14π(D2−10000)

Therefore

400000=120[14π(D2−10000)]
400000=30πD2−300000π
D2=400000+300000π30π

Answer: D=119.35 mm

2. A homogeneous 800 kg bar AB is supported at either end by a cable as shown in

Fig. P-105. Calculate the smallest area of each cable if the stress is not to
exceed 90 MPa in bronze and 120 MPa in steel.

Solution:

Symmetry:

Pbr=Pst=12(7848)
Pbr=3924 N
Pst=3924 N

For bronze cable:

Pbr=σbrAbr

3924=90Abr

Answer: Abr=43.6mm2

For steel cable:

Pst=σstAst

3924=120Ast

Answer: Ast=32.7mm2

3. For the truss shown in Fig. P-111, calculate the stresses in members CE, DE,
and DF. The cross-sectional area of each member is 1.8 in 2. Indicate tension (T)
or compression (C).

Solution:

From the FBD of the truss:

ΣMA=0

24RF=16(30)

Answer: RF=20k
At joint F:

ΣFV=0

DF=20

At joint D:

By symmetry:

ΣFV=0

3 3
DE= BD+ DF
5 5

3 1 3
DE= (33 )+ (3313)
5 3 5

Answer: DE=40k(Tension)

At joint E:

ΣFV=0

3
CE+30=40
5

2k
Answer: CE=16 (Tension)

Stresses: (Stress = Force/Area)

2
Answer: σCE= 16 /1.8 =9.26ksi (Tension)
3
Answer: σDE= 40/1.8 =22.22ksi (Tension)

4. Figure P-130 shows a roof truss and the detail of the riveted connection at joint
B. Using allowable stresses τ = 70MPa for shear and σ b = 140MPa for bearing,
how many 19mm diameter rivets are required to fasten BC to the gusset plate?
What is the largest tensile stress developed?

Solution:

At Joint C:

ΣFV=0

Answer: BC=96kN (Tension)

Section through member BD, BE, and CE:

ΣMA=0

3
8( BE)=4(96)
5

Answer: BE=80kN (Compression)

For Member BC:

Looking at the shearing of rivets:

1
96000=70[ π(192)n]
4

n=4.8 about 5 rivets

Based on bearing of member:

BC=σbAb Where Ab = rivet diameter × thickness of BC × n rivets

96000=140[19(6)n]

n=6.02 about 7 rivets

Answer: Use 7 rivets for member BC.

For member BE:

Looking at shearing of rivets:

BE=τA Where A = area of 1 rivet × number of rivets, n

1
80000=70[ π(192)n]
4

n=4.03 about 5 rivets

Looking at bearing of member:

BE=σbAb Where Ab = rivet diameter × thickness of BE × n rivets

80000=140[19(13)n]

n=2.3 about 3 rivets

Answer: Use 5 rivets for member BE.
