POWER QUALITY IMPROVEMENT USING DYNAMIC VOLTAGE RESTORER (DVR) WITH PI CONTROLLER

ABSTRACT
Power quality is one of major concerns in the present era. It has become important, especially with the introduction of sophisticated devices, whose performance is very sensitive to the quality of power supply. Power quality problem is an occurrence manifested as a non-standard voltage, current or frequency that results in a failure of end use equipments. Different solutions have been developed to protect sensitive loads against such disturbances but the dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) is considered to be the most efficient and effective solution. Its appeal includes lower cost, smaller size and its dynamic response to the disturbance. This thesis describes about DVR principles and voltage restoration methods for balance and/or unbalance voltage sag and swells in a distribution system. DVR injects a voltage on the system in order to compensate any disturbance affecting the load voltage. The most common choice for the control of the DVR is the so called PI controller since it has a simple structure and it can offer relatively a satisfactory performance over a wide range of operation. This paper presents modelling, analysis and simulation of a Dynamic Voltage Restorer (DVR) with PI controller using MATLAB.
