A Seminar report on Power Factor Correction by Pulse Width Modulated switched single capacitor -

Role of reactive power in power system:

4/8/12

Voltage drop in a network depends on reactive power flowing. reactive power will result in less steady state voltage available. available power and efficiency of motors are affected.

High

Need to control reactive power flow:

Large Poor

reactive power demand leads to poor power factor. power factor will attract penalty from authorities. it becomes necessary to control reactive power flow . system is required to control reactive power in a network.

Hence

Compensation

Compensation system
It

supplies reactive power when required and absorbs it when it is in excess. it helps in minimizing transmission loss and maintaining stable voltage.

Hence

Types of compensation systems:

FIXED

COMPENSATION-: used when reactive power is not varying very much under load conditions. capacitor and series reactor are used in this technique.

DYNAMIC

COMPENSATION-: used when reactive power varies with load cycle. compensation if used will lead to over or under compensation. is of two types(1)Direct method-TSC (2) Indirect method-TCR+FC

Pulse width modulation(PWM):

a

method of regulating the output voltage of a switching power supply by varying the width, but not the height, of a train of pulses that drives a power switch.
