V- Conservation of Electrical Appliances Consumption

5-1 Water heater
The power of the ordinary electric heater ranges 1000-3000 watt (1-3 KW) equal to a 18000 thermal
unit window AC. Thus, the water heater should be only used when needed as it consumes a great
amount of electricity.
Tips for the optimal use of heaters:
- Adjust the thermostat at 60-70 C.
- Check the safety of the thermostat and the above check valve .
- Make sure there is no leakage in the hot water connections.
- Turn off the heater in summer as there is no need to use it.
- Apply a regular maintenance for the heater to ensure its efficiency and thus consumes less
power.
- It is recommended to use solar water heater when possible.
5-2 Electric cooker
The loads of such appliances are high for the residential sector especially when igniting the stove and
the oven at one time. The power of the stove ranges 1000-2000 watt however, the oven may exceed
2000 watt.
How to conserve the consumption of the electric cooker:
- Use it only when urgently needed.
- Do not use the oven and the stove at the same time.
- Try to avoid using it during peak hours fromm 12.00 pm to 5.00 pm.
5-3 Refrigerators
It is difficult for the customer to observe conservation of refrigerator consumption as it is used
continuously. However, there are steps the customer can follow to save refrigerator electricity
consumption.

Buy a high quality and low electricity consumption refrigerator.

Set the thermostat to a reasonable degree in order to save electricity.
Do not put the refrigerator in high temperature places or directly exposed to sun rays.
Place the refrigerator 15 cm. away from the wall to ventilate the compressor
Do not put hot foods in the refrigerator.

IV- Electricity Overloads

Statistics shows that impermissible electricity
overloads are the cause of 25% of electricity
interruption in Qatar. It the main cause of fires. Law
No. 29/2008 on Electricity and Water Connection
Works makes it forbidden, after the completion of
electricity and water connection works and without
the approval of KAHRAMAA concerned department,
to overload the connections of the building or
institution. It is recommended to approach the
concerned department to get the approval before
the implementation of overload works.
In short, all of us should reduce electricity
consumption by turning off unnecessary lights and
ACs at peak hours from 12.00 pm to 5.00 pm.
4-1 Three violations to avoid:
- Adding loads to the electric connections and
apparatus.
- Applying any modification to the electric
circuits or meters.
- Changing the use of a building (e.g from
resesidential to commercial).
4-2 Tips to avoid overloads problems
- Make sure, by a certified electrician, all
connections are safe and in good condition.
- Observe conservation in electricity
consumption by switching off unnecessary
electrical appliances.
- Try, as possible, to avoid overloads whitin
peak hours (from 12.00 pm to 5.00 pm).
- Apply a regular maintenance for the electrical
appliances.
- Provide powder fire extinguisher (suitable for
electrical fires).
- Refer to KAHRAMAA before applying any
modification or change in the circuits.

3-2 The standards of thermal insulation materials

The materials of thermal insulation should enjoy:
- Low heat conduction.
- Cohesive cells of a homogeneous composition.
- High water and vapor absorption.
- High resistance of compression, and bending to meet all requirements
- Anti bacteria, mould, and acids.
- Fireproof.
3-3 Thermal insulation guidelines
- When insulating the ceiling, a layer of plastic (polyethylene) or fibers should be fixed.
- Leave no more than 1/2 cm. space when fixing the insulators.
- If metal boards are used in building construction, thermal insulator should be melt resistant.
- Thermal insulation works should be implemented under the supervision of a specialized engineer.

III- Conservation by Thermal Insulation

The thermal insulator is a material or a mixture of substances that slow down the heat transfer into the
building.
3-1 The benefits of using thermal insulator in buildings
The thermal insulator saves electricity consumption by 40%, besides it has many advantages as
follows:
- Reducing power consumption; as the thermal insulation keeps the inside heat within the
accepted rates. It also reduces ACs electricity consumption.
- Reducing the temperature of the insulated building wall surfaces by 8 C0 compared with noninsulated building.
- Better control of vapor and humidity.
- Prolonging the lifetime of the building by reducing cracks ensued due to the high temperature
and humidity.
- Protecting the environment by reducing electricity consumption and thus the emission of AC
gas.
- Protecting the furniture of the high temperature.
- Fireproof.

abide by the law by using a full or half automatic timer for outdoor lights to stop the waste.
2-3 Tips for lighting conservation
It can be achieved through various means:
- Using dimmers that reduce electricity consumption by 40%.
- Making use, as much as possible, of the natural light (sunlight) during day time.
- Using one 100 watt lamp is better than using four 25 watt.
- Installing florescent compact lamps (CFL) reflector to increase light.
- The good and deliberate design of the location of lamps at rooms and buildings: The
optimal and economic lighting in modern buildings is 8 Watt / m2 while in old building is
35 Watt / m2.
- Choosing light and reflective painting colors:

II- Conservation of indoor and outdoor lighting

Indoor and outdoor lighting consumes 10% of total electricity

consumption at a building or institution. The type and quality
of the lamp determines the rate of electricity consumption. We
recommend the use of energy saving lamps indoors, and outdoors.
It is also recommended to install timer to the outdoor lighting. The
following tips are useful for electricity conservation of outdoor and
indoor lighting.
2-1 Using energy saving lamps
We recommend the use of energy saving lamps. They are more
efficient, enjoy longer lifetime, and consume less power. The
following table shows the importance of using energy saving
lamps for electricity conservation compared with the Tungsten.

2-2 Installing outdoor light timer

Law No. 26 of 2008 on the Conservation of Electricity and Water
Consumption makes it forbidden to leave the outdoor lights, fixed
on public or private building and construction fences or facades,
switched on from 7 am to 4.30 pm. Hence, we recommend to

How to Conserve Electricity Consumption?

I- Conservation of AC electricity consumption

Qatar climate is hot and very humid in summer. The
Air conditioner (AC) is widely used to alleviate the high
temperature that reaches its peak in summer to hit 50 C.
The demand for electricity increases as a result. ACs are
estimated to consume 70% of the total power consumption
in a building or institution.
1-1 Adjusting the thermostat determines power consumption
The compressor of the window AC consumes about 18000
thermal unit / day, equal to that consumed by 25 ordinary
lamps. The compressor consumes the greater part of the AC
power. Hence, it is recommended to set the AC thermostat to
23 C to reduce the compressor working hours and thus save
electricity consumption.
1-2 The quality of AC affects power consumption
It is recommended to investigate the quality of the AC before
buying it. Make sure that it enjoys various technical advantages.
Check the label tagged by the manufacturer where you can
find information about energy efficiency, cooling capacity,
guarantee period, and electricity conservation technology.
When you have a high quality power saving AC, you save 1640% of the bill cost.
1-3 The regular maintenance ensures electricity conservation
It is recommended to apply a regular maintenance to the AC
at least once a year. Maintenance ensures the efficiency of
the AC and reduces electricity consumption. Maintenance
works should check the following:
