1 Read about the Notting Hill Carnival in this excerpt from a brochure. Fill the gaps with words from the box below. You will not need to use all of them.

Dancing in the Streets

The Notting Hill Carnival in London is the largest (1) ___________ of its kind in Europe. It hits the record books by being the biggest (2) ___________, with over a million carnival revellers and 20 miles worth of colourful (3) ___________.

The tradition started in 1964 as a local festival set up by the West Indian (4) ___________. Carnival has lengthy roots in Trinidad where it was first organised to mark the abolition of the slave trade there. The Notting Hill Carnival has now grown to be a general (5) ___________ celebration attended by people from many different corners of the world.

It takes place on the August Bank Holiday weekend with a steel band (6) ___________ on Saturday, kids day and costume prizes on Sunday and on Monday the legendary parade.
