Independent Word Study Notebook Activities

1. Cut apart and sort your word cards first. Write a header or key words for each category, and then write the words into columns.

Explain how the words in each column are alike. (Example: The words in the first column all have words that begin with the same sound fr.) 2. Blind Sort: On another sheet of paper write your headers or key words again. Mix up your words and ask a buddy to call them aloud as you write them under the correct header. 3. Draw and Label: Pick 5 words. Draw and label a picture. Write a complete sentence using each word. 4. Word Hunts: Look through the story of the week (or a book given to you) and find words that follow the same patterns. Write them under the correct headers.
