Accelerated Reader

Dear First Grade Families, We will be using the Accelerated Reader/ AR Program again this school year. You will find a few facts and guidelines to assist you below. A Student Reading Log has been placed in the back of your childs FISH Book. He/she may begin taking A.R. tests tomorrow! Starting next week, students are expected to read (or to be read to/or with) and take tests on a minimum of 3 AR Books per week. Please fill in the book title and authors name on the log each time your child is ready to take an AR test. Also, please pay close attention to the space under Check One (Read to/Listened, Read With, or Read Independently). We will read the test questions to the students who have had the book read to them or with them. Students who read books independently will be expected to read the test questions independently. The Student Reading Log should remain in the FISH Book and must be filled out each time your child is ready to take a test. A child will not be tested on a book unless it is listed on the log. Books read and tested on with a score of 60% or better earn points. The points earned count toward various clubs. New club members are announced over the intercom on Wednesday mornings and they will receive various rewards. As students become Independent Readers, their name will be placed on the large school bus at the car pool entrance on the K-2 hall. Students must read 5 books independently and pass 5 tests to become independent readers. Once your child becomes and independent reader, a S.T.A.R. test will be given to determine his/her reading level and reading goals will be set for him/her. AR books may be checked out at the Northwest Library of at the Kinston Public Library. Students may visit the library daily to return books and are allowed to check out 2 books at a time. Please encourage your first grader to participate in the AR program and set goals for them. Children that read consistently will make a tremendous amount of progress. We are looking forward to a great year in first grade!

Sincerely, Miss Singer and Mrs. Ingram
