Lesson Portfolio Entry Template

Instructional Support What tools or resources will students have to use in their work that will give them entry to, and help them reason through, the activity? Task What is the main activity that students will be working on in this lesson?
For this lesson students will be asked to work with the Diagonals to Quadrilaterals applet on the illuminations website in order to explore what properties of diagonals match with our quadrilaterals.

Students will be given a graphical organizer type sheet that will allow them to record their observations as well as ensuring that they attempt all of the possible combinations for the diagonal properties that we will be interested in. Students will also have access to the applet using the computers in the computer lab.

Learning Goals (Residue) What understandings will students take away from this activity?
Students will be able to identify the properties of the diagonals of the quadrilaterals that we have been discussing in class. Students will have some idea of which of the properties guarantee that you have a certain quadrilateral.

What questions might you ask students that will support their exploration of the activity and bridge between what they did and what you want them to learn (the two green boxes)?
Are you sure that you have made a square or could it be a rhombus?

What are the various ways that students might complete the activity? Students will use the applet to explore the properties of diagonals that allow for the quadrilaterals that we have been talking about in class. The applet allows you to set the properties of the diagonals, and then drag vertices to see what shapes can be made with the chosen diagonal properties locked in.

Do you think that one property will guarantee that you will get a _________? Can you explain using the diagonals why a square would always be a rhombus but a rhombus is not always a square? Do you see and familiar overlaps in the properties we are finding for the diagonals?

Evidence What will students say, do, produce, etc. that will provide evidence of their understandings? Students will be asked to write down their observations and findings on a sheet during the lesson. Also at the end of the lesson we will have a discussion summarizing and focusing the findings of the students at the end of the lesson
