Social Studies

The social studies curriculum involves many interactive research and reading. Students will be required to make presentations, posters, and communicate keys ideas about the social curriculum. Students are expected to keep up with textbook reading, research and be able to communicate their understanding of key ideas. Communication, reading, writing and comprehension are all important aspects of the social studies curriculum. The following information comes straight from the social studies program of studies and directly relates to how literacy will be a key aspect in social learning.

Social studies provides learning opportunities for students to: engage in active inquiry and critical and creative thinking engage in problem solving and conflict resolution with an awareness of the ethical consequences of decision making apply historical and geographic skills to bring meaning to issues and events use and manage information and communication technologies critically conduct research ethically using varied methods and sources; organize, interpret and present their findings; and defend their opinions apply skills of metacognition, reflecting upon what they have learned and what they need to learn recognize and responsibly address injustices as they occur in their schools, communities, Canada and the world communicate ideas and information in an informed, organized and persuasive manner.
