Overview
The Alcatel family of intelligent OptinexTM MultiService Gateway systems (OMSG) is designed for the real-time aspects of continuously developing networks. The ability to support a wide range of applications requested by network operators is a decisive factor in the design of these systems. Within the OMSG family, the 4/1 Multiservice Metro Gateway Alcatel OptinexTM 1641 SX, in short 4/1 OMSG, considerably improves facility management, substantially reduces operational costs and offers new, efficient services in today's and tomorrow's network environment. This product provides real-time network control for network protection and re-routing and offers hubbing, grooming, traffic segregation and add-drop functions. Moreover, it is equipped with many other features promoting efficient use of interoffice and local distribution facilities.

The information in this document is generally applicable to the equipment described. However, Alcatel is committed to continuous research and development. Changes may therefore be made in the future without notice. 3AL 69222 AAAA

Figure 1 illustrates an example of a typical network structure using the Alcatel OptinexTM 1641 SX as 4/(3/)1 OMSG and the 4/4 Multiservice Core Gateway and Cross Connect Alcatel OptinexTM 1664 SX as 4/4 OMSG. The main application areas are network nodes where a lot of traffic needs to be gathered,
3AL 69222 AAAA 9

organized and distributed: i.e. in nodes where rings are interconnected or hubs of a backbone meshed or hubbed network The Alcatel OptinexTM 1641 SX provides innovative services with high availability that utilize existing facilities while also making provision for network evolution. This document describes the features implemented in Release 6 of the 4/1 OMSG. Features planned for future releases are marked.

Main Features of Alcatel Optinex 1641 SX Release 6

TM

The information in this document is generally applicable to the equipment described. However, Alcatel is committed to continuous research and development. Changes may therefore be made in the future without notice.

The 4/1 OMSG Alcatel OptinexTM 1641 SX is a wideband Digital Cross Connect system that provides interfaces to standard line facilities and cross-connects virtual containers or collections of virtual containers complying with ITU-T Recommendation G.707 and ETSI/SONET requirements. It receives the incoming synchronous signals STM-N and processes them according to ITU-T and ETSI. The plesiochronous input signals are mapped to the corresponding virtual containers VC-4, VC-3 and VC-12. The matrix of the 4/1 OMSG provides cross connection for all container types mentioned.

Figure 2

SDH Multiplex Structure

The SDH multiplex structure illustrated in Figure 2, which is supported by the 4/1 OMSG, complies with the Recommendations ITU-T G.707 and ETS 300 147 R1. The 4/1 OMSG is divided into the following functional blocks: Cross Connect Matrix

Input/Output partsystems for line interfacing Dedicated I/O partsystems in 600 mm deep racks Common I/O shelves in 300 mm deep racks Clock Generation and Distribution Control.

General Design and Operational Aspects All central partsystems, i.e. matrix, clock generation and distribution as well as control operate fully redundantly, i.e. they are (1+1)
3AL 69222 AAAA 12

protected. All electrical I/O partsystems are designed for (1:N) equipment protection. Line and equipment protection is provided for the optical I/O partsystems (1+1). As a result of implementing a new equipment practice with 300x600 mm racks instead of 600x600 mm racks for the line interfaces, the I/O density is improved in comparison to former Releases by factors from 4 to 8. This reduces the floorspace of the system drastically. The partsystems are arranged in subracks (LMC matrix and Dedicated I/O) and Common I/O shelves. The subracks and shelves are housed in racks. The racks are mounted in rows with the possibility of multiple rack configurations. With the inter-rack optical cabling, the center row can be connected to an island at a greater distance. Cross Connect Matrix The matrix is a non-blocking three-stage Clos matrix from the Alcatel Large Matrix Configuration (LMC) families, supporting unidirectional, bidirectional and broadcast connections. In the 4/1 OMSG Release 6, only one matrix family type is provided, the LMC960. LMC448 and LMC480 families are supported. Within the LMC960 family, two versions are available:

LMC960 with a switching capacity of 960 STM-1 equivalent data streams, comprising seven racks LMC384 with a switching capacity of 384 STM-1 equivalent data streams, comprising three racks.

End stage matrices which are not fully equipped may be extended hitlessly during operation to their full capacity.

Line Interface The 4/1 OMSG provides interfaces to the following line signals:
The information in this document is generally applicable to the equipment described. However, Alcatel is committed to continuous research and development. Changes may therefore be made in the future without notice.

STM-64 optical * STM-16 optical STM-4 optical STM-1 optical STM-1 electrical 140 Mbit/s (R5) 45 Mbit/s / DS3 34 Mbit/s 2 Mbit/s 120 Ohm and 75 Ohm

1.5 Mbit/s * * planned for future releases In Alcatel OptinexTM 1641 SX Release 6, the I/O partsystems deployed with the Alcatel 1641 SX Releases 4 and 5 are augmented by a set of Common I/O shelves. These I/O shelves are common for the Alcatel Cross Connect Systems and the new generation OptinexTM MultiService Nodes (OMSN) Alcatel OptinexTM 1660 SM (Add/DropMultiplexer). The Common I/O shelves can be equipped for different types of plesiochronous and synchronous interfaces (STM-1 to STM-16). It is compatible with the LMC448 and LMC480 matrix families and, thus, easily allows line interface extensions of Alcatel OptinexTM 1641 SX systems already in the field.

Network Management Interfaces The 4/1 OMSG provides

External control interfaces to one or more operation systems and/or network management systems (such as the Alcatel 1353 family, including the Alcatel 1353 SH and Alcatel 1354 RH) Craft Terminal interface External synchronization interfaces to the clock system and vice versa.
14

3AL 69222 AAAA

Control System The 4/1 OMSG uses a hierarchically distributed processor system for control.

The information in this document is generally applicable to the equipment described. However, Alcatel is committed to continuous research and development. Changes may therefore be made in the future without notice.

Figure 4

External Control Interfaces

The 4/1 OMSG is controlled either by an Operation System (OS) or a Craft Terminal (CT) via the Q interface. The 4/1 OMSG is an integral part of the Alcatel SDH Network Management strategy. It can be controlled by the Element Manager (EM) Alcatel 1353 SH. Using the Alcatel 1354 RM, end-to-end connections in a mixed 4/1 OMSG/OMSN/ON/mW network can be automatically set-up and the quality monitored. The EM workstation has a window system based on HP OPENVIEW and provides a user-friendly graphical interface. The following management functions are available:

Cross Connection Management Configuration Management Performance Management Fault Management Security Management.

3AL 69222 AAAA

15

The Alcatel 1641 SX Craft Terminal provides a subset of the EM functionality, focussed on single NE management, including installation and commissioning functions. The operational concept and graphical interface of the CT and EM are identical (for details please refer to the CT leaflet) Clock Generation and Distribution The Clock Generation and Distribution partsystem comprises the Master Clock Board (MCB), Clock Distribution Board (CDB) and Clock Reference Unit (CRU). The task is to distribute and supervise the clock and timing reference signals. The system clock can be synchronized to one of four 2.048 MHz timing references in the modes:
The information in this document is generally applicable to the equipment described. However, Alcatel is committed to continuous research and development. Changes may therefore be made in the future without notice.

Automatic choice Manual choice Free-running.

The clock system can be used in Synchronization Supply Unit (SSU) mode or in Synchronous Equipment Clock (SEC) mode, according to ITU-T Recommendations G.812/813.

Upgrade Philosophy
One of the primary philosophies behind the design of the 4/1 OMSG is that the system can be extended in both size (extensibility) and functionality (upgradability), according to customer needs and demands. The 4/1 OMSG matrix and line interfaces can be extended simply by adding hardware and software as needed. The software upgrade is hitless. For further explanations, please refer to the Glossary. The 4/1 OMSG can be equipped with any type of Common I/O shelves from 2 Mbit/s to STM-16 both in ETSI and in SONET hierarchies. This enables the customer to tailor the system to his specific needs.

3AL 69222 AAAA

16

Extensibility Racks and subracks may be partially or fully equipped, depending on the need. I/O modules (I/O boards, I/O subracks, shelves) may be added up to the maximal capacity of the matrix. The matrix may be extended by adding matrix boards/subracks. The extension of a configuration within one release does not require any software modifications. The operation of the extensions causes no traffic interruption or hits. Upgradability New features may be added to an existing configuration by installing a new release. A new release generally consists of new software and modified/additional hardware. However, the new software is compatible with existing hardware.

The information in this document is generally applicable to the equipment described. However, Alcatel is committed to continuous research and development. Changes may therefore be made in the future without notice.

Main Benefits for the Operator

In the context of operations, the 4/1 OMSG provides

Improved I/O functionality Common I/O shelves Higher I/O density Smaller footprint New features and applications

and from the aspect of logistics, taking the common features of the 4/1 OMSG into account,

Synergy in spares Ease of spare management Ease of repairs Reduction of training requirements.

A new spare parts strategy is possible because the number of different shelves for line interfacing is reduced drastically. A combination of new equipment practice (300 mm depth, in back-to-back configuration) with the equipment practice of previous releases (600 mm depth) is possible and supported.

3AL 69222 AAAA

17

Major Differences to Release 5

Major changes in 4/1 OMSG Alcatel OptinexTM 1641 SX Release 6 with respect to Release 5 are:

High Density Interfaces (synchronous and plesiochronous Common I/Os) Monitoring the High Density Interface signals after passing the matrix Integrated/native STM-4 ports STM-4 and STM-16 with VC-4-4c Improved scalable control system Fast Equipment Protection Switching (EPS) for High Density Interfaces MS-SPRing functionality for STM-16 Fast SNCP VC-4 for High Density Interfaces Fast linear MSP (1+1) complying with ETSI/ITU, for synchronous High Density Interfaces Overhead J0 and J2 Byte handling for synchronous ports Tandem Connection Monitoring (TCM) New equipment practice for High Density Interfaces (300 mm racks) Fast cold start Colored lasers for interconnection with WDM equipment AU3/AU4 conversion for SONET-SDH interworking.

The information in this document is generally applicable to the equipment described. However, Alcatel is committed to continuous research and development. Changes may therefore be made in the future without notice.

Applications
OptinexTM MultiService Gateway systems are basically needed in flexible transport networks. The unrestricted ability of the 4/1 MultiService Metro Gateway Alcatel OptinexTM 1641 SX (4/1 OMSG), Release 6, to perform cross-connections between all kinds of PDH (Plesiochronous Digital Hierarchy) and SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) ports ensures the highest flexibility and performance for all present and future networks, e.g. when used as a gateway between the hierarchies. The 4/1 OMSG helps customers to migrate smoothly from a PDH to a SDH network. Quasi
3AL 69222 AAAA 18

static networks with multiplexers and mechanical distribution frames can be upgraded to dynamic networks providing fast reaction times for changing traffic patterns (e.g. Leased Line Service). The 4/1 OMSG can be implemented in a wide range of network configurations, e.g. meshed, ring or hub configurations. The in-service extensibility of the 4/1 OMSG, by adding features and increasing capacity to up to 960 STM-1 equivalent ports, provides the network provider with a future safe network element. Powerful monitoring functions enable the current state of the network paths to be called in. All operations on the 4/1 OMSG can be controlled locally by means of a Craft Terminal (CT) or remotely by means of the Operation System (OS). Network protection methods guarantee reliability of services to customers. The 4/1 OMSG provides an extremely secure, highly available network with protection schemes such as Multiplex Section Protection (MSP) for STM-N interfaces or SubNetwork Connection Protection (SNCP) for all bit rates. Linear MSP complies with ITU-T Recommendations G.841 and G.783. The STM-16 Common I/O shelf also supports the Multiplex Section Shared Protection Rings (MS-SPRing).

The information in this document is generally applicable to the equipment described. However, Alcatel is committed to continuous research and development. Changes may therefore be made in the future without notice. 3AL 69222 AAAA

19

Network Applications
Cross Connect in Meshed and Star-type Networks Network nodes in meshed networks and in the starpoint of star-type networks are characterized by links to more than two other nodes. The application of the 4/1 OMSG in these network topologies requires a capacity large enough for future expansion of the network node. This is provided by 4/1 OMSG. Cross Connect Interconnecting Ring Networks Ring network elements, such as OptinexTM MultiService Nodes (OMSN), are optimized for ring protection functionality and are restricted with regard to their grooming capability.

The information in this document is generally applicable to the equipment described. However, Alcatel is committed to continuous research and development. Changes may therefore be made in the future without notice.

Figure 5

Ring Network Cross-connection

A Cross Connect system between the ring coupling nodes ensures a full grooming and consolidation capability and, therefore, an efficient use of the bandwidth in the transport network. The advantage is high flexibility through non-blocking cross-connection between different rings and in service upgrade. A second application of the 4/1 OMSG in ring
3AL 69222 AAAA 20

configurations is the Dual Node Coupling, ensuring a high network availability by providing different transmission paths between two rings.

The information in this document is generally applicable to the equipment described. However, Alcatel is committed to continuous research and development. Changes may therefore be made in the future without notice.

Figure 6

Failure Management by Dual Node Coupling

If located at two different mesh points between two rings, the 4/1 OMSG supports the drop-andcontinue function. In this application, the SNCP selectors route signals in such a way that it is not possible for any combination of simultaneous failures on each ring to cause traffic interruption. Cross Connects in Submarine Head Ends Due to the increase in international traffic, many submarine networks have recently been deployed or are under construction. These networks carry large amounts of traffic which need to be distributed at the network landing points. For these applications, the Cross Connect is the optimal network element. It provides the capacity to groom and consolidate traffic at each landing station. This is even more important because fiber capacities in these submarine networks are scarce resources, and their use needs to be controlled efficiently.

3AL 69222 AAAA

21

Supervision of Quality of Service with Tandem Connection Monitoring All cross-connected signals can be monitored by connection supervision functions, i.e. Low-order Path Overhead Monitoring (LPOM) at 2 Mbit/s on the signal transmit side. The Tandem Connection Monitoring (TCM) completes the end-to-end quality supervision of a signal by the parity bits (BIP) in the container. TCM supervises a VC on its way through a subnetwork. It is possible to supervise a section of a path which runs through the area of several different network operators.

The information in this document is generally applicable to the equipment described. However, Alcatel is committed to continuous research and development. Changes may therefore be made in the future without notice.

Figure 7

TCM for Path Performance Supervision

A network operator can thus ensure Quality of Service parameters specified for his network part. The Network Management resets the TCM counter (N1 Byte) at the entry point of the path to a specific subnetwork. The parity is recalculated in every network element. In the case of a failure the amount of failures is inserted/added in/to the corresponding byte. At the exit point of the specific
3AL 69222 AAAA 22

subnetwork, the information of the TCM counter is transferred to the Network Management (OS of specific subnetwork). This information can be used to detect a failure in a subnetwork part of a path. Concatenation Application for VC-4-4c Now that the data industry is beginning to put transmission functionality in traditional data networking equipment, e.g. IP-routers which have VC-4-4c interfaces, there is a demand for greater efficiency by increasing the capacity of the "bitpipe" offered to these network users. This application is supported by the 4/1 OMSG Release 6 with the possibility for flexible 622 Mbit/s Gbit/s connections through handling concatenated signals.
The information in this document is generally applicable to the equipment described. However, Alcatel is committed to continuous research and development. Changes may therefore be made in the future without notice.

Figure 8

VC-4-4c Concatenation

In the case of VC-4-4c, virtual VC-4 containers are joined to make one high capacity VC. This high capacity VC is managed as a single VC within the cross-connect and in the network context.

23

Gateway Applications
Gateway between SDH and SONET Networks A Cross Connect system supporting both SONET and SDH mapping schemes serves as a gateway between both worlds.

The information in this document is generally applicable to the equipment described. However, Alcatel is committed to continuous research and development. Changes may therefore be made in the future without notice.

The Cross Connect is capable of connecting the SONET world at the OC-3 level and the SDH world at the STM-1 level. Gateway Between Plesiochronous and Synchronous Network Due to its large cross-connecting capability, the Cross Connect can be applied as a PDH-SDH gateway where a large amount of traffic is concentrated (e.g. large exchanges).

Network Element Applications

Network Element for Grooming and Consolidation A Cross Connect in SDH networks provides traffic grooming and consolidation functionalities. Grooming is the reorganization of incoming traffic from different links that are destined for one destination to links which are assigned to this traffic destination. Consolidation means reorganizing traffic from lightly loaded links onto fewer, more heavily loaded links to increase system fill and equipment utilization. Network Element of Medium Size and Full VC-12 Access For network elements with just a few STM-16 interfaces or higher and complete VC-12 access, the total system capacity may easily exceed the size of network elements with a restricted system capacity. In these cases, the Cross Connect is able to perform the required functionality with full flexibility and extensibility. In contrast to the Cross Connect, a conglomeration of small sized network elements which are connected via cables would be very inflexible and restrictive.

System Extension and Upgrade

New 4/1 OMSGs are only deployed with Release 6 hardware. Matrix and I/O upgrades are hitless within Release 6.
3AL 69222 AAAA 26

Starting with an 4/1 OMSG Release 5 system, it is possible to add the new Release 6 I/Os to the existing I/O partsystems thus upgrading it to Release 6. The Shelf Controllers (SC) of the new Common I/O shelves have to be connected to the LAN switches of the internal control communication system, the GTI interfaces to free ports of the end stages of the LMC matrix. The new Common I/O racks can be installed in a multiple row configuration as it is already supported for Release 5 racks. A mixture of existing and new hardware can thus be operated. The In Service Upgrade from Release 5 to Release 6 for software is supported. An upgrade from LMC480 to LMC960 is supported. An upgrade from LMC448 and LMC384 to LMC960 is not supported. Prerequisites for an upgrade from Release 5 to Release 6 are:

The information in this document is generally applicable to the equipment described. However, Alcatel is committed to continuous research and development. Changes may therefore be made in the future without notice.

Upgrade from the LMC224 matrix type supported in Release 5 to LMC448 (no LMC224 and square matrices are supported in Release 6). The Administrative Unit must be an NAU with a LAN switch in the internal LAN backbone. The upgrade of the Administrative Unit has to be performed in Release 5.

3AL 69222 AAAA

27

Equipment Protection
To protect the 4/1 OMSG network element from single failures of equipment parts which would lead to traffic interruptions on the affected crossconnection, the 4/1 OMSG partsystems operate with redundancy. All central partsystems, such as Control, Matrix and Clock Generation and Distribution, are fully redundant, i.e. they are (1+1) protected. All electrical I/O partsystems are designed for (1:N) protection. For the optical I/O partsystems, (1+1) protection is provided.
The information in this document is generally applicable to the equipment described. However, Alcatel is committed to continuous research and development. Changes may therefore be made in the future without notice.

1+1 Equipment Protection

Figure 12

(1+1) Equipment Protection Scheme

The protection scheme (1+1) implies that for every working equipment or partsystem, there is an additional one running parallel to which the traffic is broadcast. In the event of a failure, e.g. of Equipment 1, the traffic is switched to the redundant equipment.

3AL 69222 AAAA

28

1:N Equipment Protection In this case, N working equipment are protected by one redundant equipment. In the event of a failure e.g. of Equipment 1, the traffic is switched to the redundant Equipment P. In the case of the 4/1 OMSG, this protection scheme is used for the electrical I/O partsystems.

The information in this document is generally applicable to the equipment described. However, Alcatel is committed to continuous research and development. Changes may therefore be made in the future without notice.

Multiplex Section Protection A Multiplex Section Protection (MSP) configuration consists of the broadcast, called bridging, of a VC-4 to two separate multiplex sections in the transmit direction and a selector function in the receive direction. The selection of one of the two received signals is performed according to the signal quality and the MSP protocol in the counter direction if available. The two sections have to be terminated in the same subrack.

Protection scheme 1:n (dual-ended MSP) (n = 1, 2, 3, ...) 1. Send n signals on n working links at A 2. Evaluate MS signal at B 3. Report signal state to A via K1/K2 bytes 4. If one of the signals is not good, switch at A to protection link 5. Later, roll back

Figure 14

Multiplex Section Protection (MSP)

Single-ended MSP In single-ended protection mode, switching is unidirectional. The selection of one of the two VC-4 signals occurs independently for each direction of the bidirectional signal. There is no communication between the selector functions. The signal from the redundant route is selected with the help of a protection function within the I/O STM-N partsystem. There is no automatic restoring because each route has the same priority. If a failure is detected in the section currently active, the redundant route is selected and then becomes the active section. Dual-ended Linear MSP In dual-ended protection mode, switching is bidirectional. When the signal received from the working route in one direction is detected as bad, a switch is performed with the help of a protection function within the I/O partsystem. In the counter direction, the switch is reported by the K1/K2 bytes

in the Section Overhead (SOH) of the transmitted synchronous signal to the far end receiver. As a result, this receiver also switches to the redundant route. 2-fiber MS-SPRing The 2-fiber MS-SPRing protection mode is provided for a ring configuration of Network Elements (NE) with at least two bidirectional STM-16 ports.

The information in this document is generally applicable to the equipment described. However, Alcatel is committed to continuous research and development. Changes may therefore be made in the future without notice.

Figure 15

Multiplex Section Shared Protection Ring (MS-SPRing)

The NEs are connected in a ring by means of two optical fibers, one for the clockwise direction and the other for counter-clockwise. The entire VC-4 transmission capacity is divided into one half working VC-4s and one half protection VC-4s. The protection capacity may be used for low priority traffic which is lost in case of failure (extra traffic). MS-SPRing is performed by sending the VC-4 on the working output. In the case of a failure, the VC3AL 69222 AAAA 32

4 is switched to the protecting output in the counter direction. Switching is controlled by K1/K2 protocol and performed in less than 50 ms. If the working path is restored, the VC-4 is switched back automatically (revertive mode). Subnetwork Connection Protection A Subnetwork Connection Protection (SNCP) configuration consists of the broadcast of one VC of a plesiochronous signal to two separate paths in the transmission direction and a selector function in the receive direction. The selection of one of the two received signals is performed according to the signal quality.

The information in this document is generally applicable to the equipment described. However, Alcatel is committed to continuous research and development. Changes may therefore be made in the future without notice.

Figure 16

Subnetwork Connection Protection

The protection mode is single-ended (unidirectional) switching. The selection of one of the two connections occurs independently for each direction of the bidirectional signal. There is no communication between the selector functions. There is no automatic restoring because each route has the same priority. If a failure is detected in the route currently active, the redundant route is selected and then becomes the active route.

Cross Connection Management The path configuration management deals with the creation, modification and clearing of terminated or non-terminated paths within a managed network. This task is part of the Alcatel 1354 RM Regional Manager. This SDH Regional Manager provides the facilities for end-to-end connection management in an SDH network. Functions such as path creation or path scheduled operation are included in the manager. Configuration Management Configuration Management comprises all the tasks required to configure and reconfigure the equipment and the transmission functionality of the 4/1 OMSG. All cross-connections are configured according to the switching commands received from the operator.

Performance Management The 4/1 OMSG provides configurable monitoring of signals at its interfaces. Performance data is collected and stored to maintain the performance data history and statistics. Events are collected and filtered based on ITU-T Recommendation G.826 (Ed. 97). Fault Management Appropriate alarms, status indications and alarm records are generated in case of failures. Alarms are received from the equipment, transmission functions and other applications, such as Security Management.
The information in this document is generally applicable to the equipment described. However, Alcatel is committed to continuous research and development. Changes may therefore be made in the future without notice.

Detection capabilities are provided and fault corrections are started, e.g. reconfiguration or automatic switching to redundant devices. Security Management The system is protected unauthorized users. against misuse by

The Graphical User Interface (GUI) is a standardized, multi-window, color, graphical interface. It is based on X.11 and HP OpenView. Commands and information requests are entered via the keyboard or mouse. Ergonomic design enables operators to execute its task efficiently. User-friendliness is a key issue in the development of the GUI. For example, visual presentation of all available cross-connections allows easy control and supervision of the network element 4/1 OMSG. A context sensitive online help system on a hypertext base supports the operator where necessary. Automatic system restart is carried out after power failure or process crash.
The information in this document is generally applicable to the equipment described. However, Alcatel is committed to continuous research and development. Changes may therefore be made in the future without notice.

A restart or power down of a CT does not affect the operability of the 4/1 OMSG.

Network Management
The 4/1 OMSG is typically deployed in a Network Release context and is thus managed by the Alcatel network management systems. For reasons of controllability of the network element in case of a failure of the control network, it is possible to manage the 4/1 OMSG as a stand alone network element which is done by the Alcatel 1641/1664 SX Craft Terminal (CT) and described in Section 3.5.6. Embedding of the 4/1 OMSG in the Alcatel management system according to the Network Releases is illustrated in Figure 18.

System Architecture
Cross Connect Matrix
The Matrix partsystem is the central part of the 4/1 Multiservice Metro Gateway Alcatel OptinexTM 1641 SX (4/1 OMSG). Two identical copies of matrices are connected to the I/O interfaces and perform cross-connections of the VCs. One input and one output of the matrix is called a matrix port. The format of the signals between the I/O and the matrix ports is the Alcatel standardized signal format for internal interfaces called Generic Transport Interface (GTI). It is similar to the STM1 format. The size of the matrix is defined by the number of STM-1 equivalent ports.
The information in this document is generally applicable to the equipment described. However, Alcatel is committed to continuous research and development. Changes may therefore be made in the future without notice.

Figure 19

Matrix Interfaces

The matrix only receives and transmits signals in GTI format. The incoming signals are mapped or converted into GTI on the plesiochronous and synchronous I/O boards or the Common I/O shelves. The GTI frame is based on the STM-1 frame specified by ITU-T Recommendation G.707. It enables the transport of all signals of the US hierarchy and ETSI hierarchy levels 1 to 4 (1.5
3AL 69222 AAAA 39

Mbit/s to 140 Mbit/s) mapped to Virtual Containers (VC). The VCs are sent from the I/O boards or Common I/O shelves to both copies of the Matrix (A and B) via the GTI. The matrix performs the crossconnection on the VC-4, VC-3 or VC-12 level and sends the VCs to the relevant I/O boards or Common I/O shelves via GTI. The configuration of both matrix copies is always identical. On the I/O boards or Common I/O shelf, one GTI signal is selected from Copy A or Copy B, based on quality. The matrix supports the following connection types: Unidirectional

Bidirectional Broadcast.

Complex cross-connections, such as Protected Broadcast

Drop & Insert Drop & Continue

are supported via combining unidirectional, bidirectional, SNCP and broadcast crossconnections. The quality of a connection is supervised with the help of identifiers which are inserted into the VCs on the input ports. The identifiers received from the matrix on the output ports are compared with those expected. In case of a mismatch, the signal from the other matrix copy is selected. A parity bit is also used to check the quality of the connection. In order to achieve a maximum size, the matrix is configured in a three stage Clos structure called Large Matrix Configuration (LMC). It is nonblocking for unidirectional and bidirectional connections. The Clos network of the LMC consists of an input stage, a center stage and an output stage. Input and output stages perform space and time switching and are also called end stages. The central stage simply performs space switching. The LMC uses a hitless rearrangement procedure for the Clos network. In the 4/1 OMSG Release 6, only the LMC960 matrix family type is provided, the full version

LMC960 with a switching capacity of 960, the partial version LMC384 with 384 STM-1 equivalent data streams. LMC448 and LMC480 families are supported. With the expansion ratio of 24x32, together with an increased cross-connecting capability of 960 STM-1 equivalents, the LMC960 matrix provides improved FFP and broadcast capability. Mechanically, the LMC960 is implemented in highcapacity double subracks. An Hi-cap End Stage Subrack (HESS) comprises two rows of End stage Matrix Boards with 32 ports (EXB32), an Hi-cap Center Stage Subrack (HCSS) comprises two rows of Center stage Matrix Boards with 40 ports (CXB40).

Extensions by adding more EXB32s within the LMC960 family are hitless. The possibility of an In Service Upgrade from LMC384 to the full LMC960 matrix is planned for future releases. Both LMC960 versions support fast SNCP (FFP) at VC-12 level in 50 ms.

Cross Connect Control System

Architecture The 4/1 OMSG uses a hierarchical distributed processor system for control, the Control partsystem.

Administrative Unit (AU) Control Level The central processor, Administrative Unit AU, hosts all application and configuration software and is the main processing and control element of the 4/1 OMSG. The application software comprises the internal Alcatel Info Model interface which enables connection of the 4/1 OMSG to the OSspecific application software. The AU provides a non-volatile memory storage system for all system data.

The information in this document is generally applicable to the equipment described. However, Alcatel is committed to continuous research and development. Changes may therefore be made in the future without notice.

Satellite Processor (SP) / Shelf Controller (SC) Control Level The second stage of the Control partsystem consists of the SPs controlling the double subracks of the Matrix partsystem and Dedicated I/O partsystems and the SCs controlling the Common I/O shelves.

User Board (UB) Control Level (in Matrix partsystem and Dedicated I/O partsystems) The third stage is the UB comprising UB Processing Element (UBPE) with data processing or UB Access Element (UBAE) without data processing

To protect the internal data communication, all links and processing elements are redundant. Figure 26 illustrates the control system architecture together with the system internal communication system.

The New Administrative Unit (NAU) is the central processing element of the 4/1 OMSG Control partsystem. All relevant data is stored in the NAU. The external interfaces to the CT, OS etc. are terminated and handled in the NAU. The NAU computer system is based on SPARC architecture with Solaris as the operating system. HDisks are used for system and application data. The NAU is provided in a separate subrack in a standard industrial housing, has its own power supply, forced cooling and overheating security mechanism.
3AL 69222 AAAA 46

The NAU is connected via a system internal LAN backbone:

Through redundant New Communication Controllers (NCC) located in the New Utility Subrack (NUTS) to the Matrix and Dedicated I/O double subracks containing Satellite Processor Boards (SPB) and User Boards (UB). To the Shelf Controllers (SC) of the Common I/O shelves.

The NCC handles the protocols used for the communication towards the NAU and SPBs. The SPBs control and monitor the UBs of their associated double subrack.
The information in this document is generally applicable to the equipment described. However, Alcatel is committed to continuous research and development. Changes may therefore be made in the future without notice.

The UBPEs or UBAEs are located directly on the UBs. They perform the access of the Control partsystem to the on-board transmission and switching related circuitries. The SC performs the control functions of the Common I/O shelves. It has redundant 10BaseT interfaces for communication with the NAU. The EC handles the Data Communication Channels (DCC) and performs DCC routing. Internal Communication System A LAN backbone is introduced in 4/1 OMSG, Release 6, as an internal communication system. It is established with standard LAN Switches which are managed and supervised remotely by the NAU (see Figure 27). The LAN switches are setup from the modules

LAN Switches in the LAN Backbone

A large number of SPBs and Common I/O shelves with their SCs can thus be connected to the NAU. For redundancy reasons, the LAN backbone is split into two copies. Each copy is established with separate and independent LAN switch devices. With the introduction of the LAN switches, the redundancy concept is enhanced due to the fact that both NAUs can directly access each NCC and SC within the system. Control Interfaces The following control interfaces are available:

System(ES)-IS routing. Redundancy Architecture

The NAUs, the LAN switches, the SCs and the SPs are duplicated. The UB is not duplicated. It is protected by a specific UB protection scheme. Each SP has two communication interfaces to the redundant NCCs. Each NCC is connected to the LAN backbone. Each SC has redundant LAN interfaces with the LAN backbone. Each UB has two communication interfaces to the associated SPs. Each interface is connected to a different associated SP.

The information in this document is generally applicable to the equipment described. However, Alcatel is committed to continuous research and development. Changes may therefore be made in the future without notice.

Operating Principles The structure provided enables a single point of failure to occur, without loosing the capability of accessing an operational UB or SC from an external interface, e.g. OS. The NAU computer system is composed of two identical NAU computers. The redundancy scheme of the NAU computers is 1:1. The run-time data is automatically updated between both the active and the inactive NAU computer. There is no loss of data in the case of protection switching (either manually or automatically). The redundancy scheme of the two SPs in a double subrack configuration is 1+1. The passive SP is operational, i.e. the application software is loaded and the SP performs cyclic access tests to the UBs (polling). This access is carried out to verify the accessibility of all UBs in subracks A and B. The passive SP is not involved in the control of the UBs in the associated double subrack. This provides the possibility of taking one SP out of service and unplugging the SP board, while the active SP continues to provide service for all UBs. The redundancy of both SPBs is managed completely by the NAU which is responsible for automatically selecting the active SP. The AU-SP, AU-SC and SP-UBPE communication

links are based on standard data transmission protocols which guarantee a reliable message transfer. The NUTS houses the NCC boards and also reserves slots for boards known from the Small AU in previous Releases. The MCB is located here, for example.

The electrical line signals are connected to access boards where they are electrically terminated before they reach the I/O port boards where the transport terminal functions, such as signal regeneration and decoding, clock recovery and adaptation functions, such as VC-4 assembly/disassembly, are performed. K1/K2 bytes are filtered and passed to the network protection function in the Shelf Matrix Extender (SMX) board where they are evaluated and, if necessary, protection switching (MSP) is initialized. The optical line signals are directly connected to the I/O port boards. Each I/O port board sends/receives 8 or 16 STM-1 signals (depending on port width) to/from each SMX board (active and stand-by).
The information in this document is generally applicable to the equipment described. However, Alcatel is committed to continuous research and development. Changes may therefore be made in the future without notice.

Network Protection Transmission, control and synchronization functions are located on the SMX board. The transmission related functions are:

3AL 69222 AAAA

The network protection functional block receives all adapted signals from the I/O port boards and selects 64 STM-1. K1/K2 bytes are used to activate the network protection functions (MSP switch and SNCP) and also Equipment Protection Switching functions (EPS). The received DCCs are collected and transmitted to the Equipment Controller (EC). In transmit direction, the network protection function adds to the cross-connected frames the DCCs received from the EC, the overhead bytes received from the SERVICE board and the K1/K2 bytes and sends the frames to the respective I/O port boards. The clock and synchronization related functions are performed by the Clock Reference Unit (CRU). The CRU receives the redundant system clocks (155 MHz with missing pulse) from the 4/1 OMSG Master Clock Board (MCB), selects one of the clocks and generates the clock and synchronization signals for the Common I/O shelf. Redundant synchronization outputs are provided via the CONGI board interface. The clock is recovered from SDH I/O boards or from the 2 Mbit/s interfaces. The control functions are performed by the Shelf Controller (SC) which controls all ASICs, including the interfaces to the redundant SMX board. It implements redundant LAN interfaces (10BaseT) for the communication with the central computing system Administration Unit (AU) of the 4/1 OMSG. The SC supports the Physical Shelf Control Element function. The control functionality is related to the Physical Machine Management Function with the basic tasks:

Common I/O Shelf Architecture The Common I/O shelf is able to support all types of interfaces ranging from 2 Mbit/s to STM-16 in a flexible way. The relevant slots may be equipped with any type of I/O board. The shelf is divided into the access area and the port area (see Figure 31). Access Area In the access area, access boards are plugged in which provide the physical interface for the electrical line signals and partly for the STM-1 optical line signal. In addition, two CONGI boards and a SERVICE board are located in the middle of this area. In a shelf configuration handling STM-1 electrical ports with 1:N equipment protection, a High-speed Protection (HPROT) board is required in the access area which is associated with the protection I/O board in the port area. Port Area The port area contains the port boards which provide the optical line interfaces, via front access, and perform all digital signal processing. The SMX boards and the Equipment Controller boards (EQUICO) are also plugged in in this area. The SMX boards interface the LMC960 matrix via front access electrical/optical cabling.

Clock Generation and Distribution

The clock generation can be configured for the Synchronous Equipment Clock (SEC) type, complying with ITU-T Recommendation G.813 or the Synchronization Supply Unit (SSU) type complying with G.812. The SEC is the lowest SDH synchronization level. Each Network Element (NE) provides an SEC. The initial frequency offset in hold-over mode is less than 5x10-8 and the maximum frequency deviation during the hold-over mode operation caused by temperature variation is 2 ppm. The filter bandwidth in tracking mode is 1 Hz. The SSU is the master synchronization source for all NEs within a node. The initial frequency offset in the hold-over mode is less than 5x10-10. The filter bandwidth in tracking mode is 3 mHz.

The information in this document is generally applicable to the equipment described. However, Alcatel is committed to continuous research and development. Changes may therefore be made in the future without notice.

Tasks
The partsystem Clock Generation and Distribution performs the following tasks:

Provisioning of several selectable reference timing sources Selection of one of these reference timing sources for synchronizing the clock generator for generating the internally required system clocks Provisioning of external clock output selected from clocks derived from STM-N signals Provisioning of external clock output derived from the system clock Redundant distribution of the system clock within the equipment.

Up to four 2.048 MHz timing references are supported. One of the four timing references is selected as the active timing reference either automatically according to a priority list, or manually. If no timing reference is available an internal clock oscillator is used. In addition, two external 2.048 MHz clock outputs are provided.

Figure 39

Block Diagram of Master Clock Board MCB

Principle of Clock and Frame Distribution The redundant clock generators (Master Clock Board MCB) transmit clock signals which have the same frequency within the system. The system clock is modulated with the frame clock. One of the two clock signals is designated as the active clock, the corresponding MCB is the master, either arbitrarily or by means of the Control partsystem. The other MCB is the slave, synchronized by the master MCB and producing the stand-by clock. In case of a failure in the active clock, there is a hitless switchover to the stand-by clock and the slave MCB becomes the master. Hitless means that there is a phase jump which is short in comparison to a clock period. The modulated system clocks are transmitted to the first-stage CDBs in the Matrix double subracks. Each of the first-stage CDBs receives the clock from one of the two MCBs and distributes it to the second-stage CDBs in the double subracks and to the Clock Reference Unit (CRU) of the Common I/O shelves. The second-stage CDBs distribute the clock to the Clock and Frame distribution Circuits (CFC) on the User Boards. CRU and CFC select one of the clocks and demodulate the frame clock.

Synchronization Sources The 4/1 OMSG terminates a maximum of four timing references derived from synchronization sources and provides external control to switch references automatically or via a forced switch command. These timing references can be

an external timing reference standard derived from a 2 Mbit/s signal derived from an STM-N signal.

The 2.048 MHz synchronization reference signals comply with ITU-T Recommendation G.703.
The information in this document is generally applicable to the equipment described. However, Alcatel is committed to continuous research and development. Changes may therefore be made in the future without notice.

The following criteria are used for suppression of the synchronization reference:

Loss of Signal Alarm Indication Signal Loss of Frame (STM-N only) Excessive Bit Error Rate Timing Deviation Criteria.

The four synchronization references are designated with different priorities. In case of a failed or suppressed synchronization reference, it is automatically switched over to the partner references with the highest priority. Automatic switching from one reference to the next maintains synchronous operation. If the last reference also fails, the 4/1 OMSG clock enters a hold-over mode. If failed timing references are restored, switch back is performed automatically. Manually forced control of the timing reference selection is also provided. The 4/1 OMSG initiates appropriate alarms and status reports when timing references are lost or other synchronization-related fault conditions occur.

3AL 69222 AAAA

70

Operation Modes Tracking Mode Normally, the clock generator is in the tracking mode locked to the selected timing reference. Low bandwidth filtering removes phase noise from the clock signal being tracked. The actual frequency offset of such a timing reference must not exceed the pull-in range of the clock supply of 4.6x10-6 with respect to the nominal frequency. Short interrupts of the tracked timing reference are accommodated without switching to another timing reference or generating an output phase transient.
The information in this document is generally applicable to the equipment described. However, Alcatel is committed to continuous research and development. Changes may therefore be made in the future without notice.

Hold-Over Mode If all timing references fail, the clock generator enters Hold-over mode. It keeps the frequency of the latest timing reference being tracked within a specified precision range. Free-Running Mode In case there is no timing reference available at the time the clock generator goes into service, an internal oscillator is used to generate the clocks. This oscillator has a frequency tolerance of 4.6x106. No adjustment of the oscillator frequency is required within the lifetime of the oscillator. Under normal operating conditions, the clock generator is not in the free-running mode.

Equipment Practice
The equipment practice of the 4/1 MultiService Metro Gateway Alcatel OptinexTM 1641 SX (4/1 OMSG) has been designed in a modular structure complying with ETSI standard practice ETS 300 119 (IEC 917). It consists of cabinets, racks, subracks and boards. Release 5 equipment practice is supported.

Racks
The standard racks are 600 mm deep racks which house Matrix, Control and Dedicated I/O

partsystems.

The information in this document is generally applicable to the equipment described. However, Alcatel is committed to continuous research and development. Changes may therefore be made in the future without notice.

Figure 41

Standard Rack Configuration (Example)

Four EMC screening top, bottom and side panels are attached to the standard rack and two-panel metal doors are mounted at the front and rear. Each standard rack contains up to two double subracks with air baffles to protect upper subracks from rising heat. Common I/O racks house up to two Common I/O shelves with air baffles. Shielding is performed on a shelf basis, no rack screening is needed. Both types of racks are available with power distribution unit and cable access located at the top or at the bottom of the rack, also in a normal or earthquake compliant version. The constituent racks of an 4/1 OMSG system are mounted side by side in rows, with side panels only at the end of the row and are fixed to each other by
3AL 69222 AAAA 72

means of contact rails. The racks max be arranged in two rows (earthquake protected rack) or multiple rows. The Common I/O racks can be placed back to back, thus enabling an increased I/O density per 600 mm x 600 mm footprint compared with prior releases.

Cabling
Standard Rack Cabling All electrical signal cables from the outside into the screened area have to be fed through the Signal Cable Grounding Labyrinth (SCGL), in order to ground the cable screen mesh. This is true for

LAN cabling. The cables of the internal LAN, between NAU, NUTS and LAN Switches, are fed through the SCGL. The external LAN is connected by BNC connectors.

The internal connections of the electrical cables can be accessed after opening the rear door. Optical fiber signal cables are carried through a fiber guide and connected on the frontside of the optical I/O boards. the connections can be accessed after opening the front door. Common I/O Rack Cabling
The information in this document is generally applicable to the equipment described. However, Alcatel is committed to continuous research and development. Changes may therefore be made in the future without notice.

The electrical station cables are connected directly to the shelves via access boards, no SCGL is reqired. Optical fiber cables are connected to the shelves via both, access and port boards. Optical Inter-rack Cabling With optical inter-rack cabling, a maximum distance of 200 m is possible between Common I/O shelves and matrix boards, thus supporting a distributed system installation. An optical version of the Shelf Matrix Extender (SMX) board and of the adapter boards on the LMC matrix side is used. Optics always cover the whole 64 GTI link capacity, independent of the Common I/O shelf configuration.

Subracks
The Release 6 related double subracks I/O 45 Mbit/s/DS3 (IOS45), Matrix End Stage (HESS) and Center Stage (HCSS) consist of a single chassis with a common backpanel and integrated air baffle. All connections between the boards are performed via backpanel wiring, only external connections are performed by cabling. The New Administration Unit (NAU) and the LAN Switches are provided in a standard industrial housing which differs from S9 equipment and, as result, requires some adaptation effort. The NAU has forced cooling and overheating protection. The New Utility Subrack (NUTS) consists of a single subrack, comprising two functional elements in a redundant configuration. The Common I/O shelf is divided in two areas, the access area in the upper part of the shelf and the port area in the lower. Both areas have the same height but different depth. All connections within the shelf are performed by backpanel wiring.

The information in this document is generally applicable to the equipment described. However, Alcatel is committed to continuous research and development. Changes may therefore be made in the future without notice.

Station Alarm
It is possible to equip four alarm lamps and four alarm contacts in one rack. The lamps are located at the top of each rack. The alarms are divided into URGENT and NON-URGENT alarms.

Power Supply
Supply Voltage The power supplies of the 4/1 OMSG have a nominal input voltage of -48 V or -60 V. In each standard double subrack, four power converters convert the -48 V/-60 V input voltage to the required board voltage. The power converters form a 3:1 protecting configuration. The power for the Common I/O shelves are supplied via the CONGI board interface. The NAU has its own power supply. The LAN Switches are supplied by power inverters.

A pre-circuit breaker (35 ...100 A) is inserted in the 48/60 V connection. Several racks may be connected to one pre-circuit breaker. Three power filters are located at each rack input. The distributed power supply for the Common I/O shelf is illustrated in Figure 43. The Main Power Block provides filtering, protection and delivers the power to the Common I/O boards. Each board in the port area of the Common I/O shelf receives the power signal and exploits the internal On Board Power Supply (OBPS) for the voltages and currents required. The power is also distributed to the access area for the SERVICE board and also for optional optical modules. In the access area, Vcc power is obtained through the OBPS function of the CONGI board and fed to every slot for the power supply of the access boards.
