n - Impact of Rapid Prototyping and Tooling on Product Development Benefits- Applications Digital prototyping Virtual prototyping PROTOTYPE A prototype is the first or original example of something that has been or will be copied or developed; it is a model or preliminary version. RAPID PROTOTYPING The term rapid prototyping (RPT) refers to a class of technologies that can automatically construct physical models from Computer-Aided Design (CAD) data without explicitly going through the various conventional steps of manufacturing a part. RAPID TOOLING Rapid Tooling processes use CAD/CAM techniques to make tools and moulds for product assessment, short production runs and full production. The development cycles are considerably shortened and economic. Rapid tooling approaches fall into two categories: Direct routes, which use the CAD, file to produce the tool in the final material. Indirect routes, which use a rapid prototyping model as master pattern or case to make the moulds by established routes. RE-ENGINEERING The term re-engineering refers to a class of technologies that is used to reconstruct the 3D CAD model from physical model by collecting the cloud points of data collected from the physical model by scanning for the collection of the coordinates of the model. Need for RPT Reduce product development time, cost Designs can be interpreted properly by prototypes Easy and quick modifications in design Functional and design verification
