Solving Systems of Linear Equations

Students will use graphing in order to find the solution of a system.

Students will use what they know about graphing equations. Shows what the point of intersection represents in a system of two equations.

Will be used in order to classify different types of systems and their solutions.

Introduces the special types of linear systems.

A system can either have parallel lines, intersecting lines, or lines that are coincident.

A system can either be inconsistent or consistent.

If the lines are parallel, the system is inconsistent with no solution.

If the lines are intersecting, the system is consistent with one solution. If the lines are coincident, the solution is consistent with infinitely many solutions.

Two other methods to determine the solution of a system.

Substitution and Elimination are two methods to solve linear systems.

Allows students to create systems from tasks and use these methods in order to solve them.

Students determine which method is best to use for different situations and how to apply them.

Leads into how to solve systems of linear inequalities.

Students will use what they know about graphing inequalities in order to find the solution to a system of inequalities.

To determine whether a system of bounded or unbounded and identifies the corner points.

Students will be introduced to linear programming.
