BEME-F-09-A ME 312 Instrumentation and Measurements ASSIGNMENT # 5 THERMOCOUPLES

11 April, 2012 Q:1 A type K thermocouple is used to measure the temperature in a freezer compartment. The reference junction is connected properly to an ice bath, and the voltage output from the thermocouple circuit is 2.721 mV. Calculate the temperature in the freezer compartment. Give your answer in units of oC to three significant digits. Note: Use the thermocouple tables, at appendix 3 of Text Book Measurement & Instrumentation Principles by Alan S Morris. Q: 2 A sixth semester student uses a type K thermocouple to measure the temperature in a freezer. The actual (true) temperature in the freezer is T1 = -200.0o C. The thermocouple voltages are measured properly with an ice bath reference. Unfortunately, the ice bath has too much water, and its temperature is actually 1.00oC instead of 0.00oC. The student is not aware of this he assumes that the ice bath is at 0.00oC. Calculate the temperature the student measures, and the percentage error. Use the appendix 3 thermocouple tables for consistency. Q: 3 Jamal uses a type E thermocouple to measure the temperature of an oven. He has no ice bath, but he uses a reference bath exposed to the ambient air, which he measures with a thermometer to be 20oC. The voltage Jamal reads is 8.714 mV. Calculate the temperature in the oven. Use appendix 3 thermocouple tables for consistency.

Notes: (a) (b) Making an appropriate diagram(s) to solve the problem(s) would be helpful. While using thermocouple tables interpolation methods should be applied to arrive at answers. Submission optional
