STORAGE DEVICES

These are the secondary devices used for storing a large amount of data permanently.

Types of storage devices

Magnetic disk Hard disk

Optical disks

Magnetic Disk
These have large storage capacities wit moderate operating speed. They store information on circular disks.

These disks are continually spinning and are coated with magnetic material.
Information is recorded on them by using magnetic heads by drawing circular tracks on them.

HARD DISK
It stores information in the form of circular platters which are continually spinning and are coated with magnetic materials. The information is recorded on it with the help of magnetic heads in bands called tracks. Each track is divided into pie-shaped sections called sectors. Each sector holds a specified number of characters.

OPTICAL DISKS

They have high recording densities.

These make use of the laser beams for recording information . These are of two types: (1) Compact disks (2) Magneto-optical drives
