Working
Hard Drive
 A hard disk drive is a non-
volatile storage device for
digital data.
 It features one or more rotating rigid platters on a motor-
driven spindle within a metal case.
 The platters are spun at very high speeds. Information is
written to a platter as it rotates past devices called read-and-
write heads that operate very close over the magnetic surface
 The magnetic surface of each platter is conceptually divided
into many small sub-micrometre-sized magnetic regions, each
of which is used to encode a single binary unit of information.
 Data is encoded magnetically by read/write heads that float on
a cushion of air above the platters.
Pen Drive
 Pen drives consist of a
small printed circuit
board. This circuit board
provides a sturdy base for
the pen drive's form and
also serves as a means to
collect information
Floppy Disk
 Inside the hard plastic case of the
floppy disk is a magnetic material
used to store data.
 When disk is inserted into the
drive the magnetic tape is spun
around rapidly much like a CD.
 The write head of the disk sends
data to the disk by magnetizing
certain parts of the magnetic
recording tape
Compact Disk
 When a CD is manufactured, the data
is imprinted by way of a single
continuous microscopic spirals.
