The Renewable Energy N etwork for Aggregated and Integrative Syst ems has a new partnership with a major regional bank that will leverage the federal and state tax credits and lower the base pri ce of the Mitsubishi iMiEV (left ) for a l ease for public and non -profit fleet managers. In effect, this program lowers the cap price of the i MiEV down to less than $25,000 in a l ease arrangement for 60 months. This will allow state, county, city, university and college fl eet managers to get all-electric vehicl es by using operating budgets and not requiring approval for capital fund commitment. EVS26 20-Minute Fast Charge Debuts From Major Automakers


Live charging demonstrations were conduct ed during the Electric Vehicl e Symposium in earl y May. The combined charging system integrates one-phase AC-charging, fast threephase AC-charging, DCcharging at home and ultrafast DC-charging at public stations into one vehicle inlet. This will allow customers to charge at most existing charging stations regardless of power source and may speed more affordable adoption of a standardized infrastructure. The International Societ y of Automotive Engineers (SAE) has chosen the Combined Charging System as the fastcharging methodology for a standard that incrementally extends the existing Type 1based AC charging. Global automakers from the United States and Germany have standardized on a new fast-charging technology that will enable the recharging of most electrified vehicles with compatible systems in as little as 15-20 minutes. Audi, BMW, Chrysl er, Daimler, Ford, General Motors, Porsche and Volkswagen have agreed to support a harmonized single-port fast charging approach called DC Fast Charging with a Combined Charging System for use on electric vehicl es in Europe and the United States.

Obama Calls For More Bio-Based Products Usage, Including Fuels In Federal Fleets
On February 21, 2012, President Obama issued a Presidential Memorandum directing the Federal Government to take decisive steps to dramatically increase the purchase of biobased products over the next two years. The st eps include: increasing the number of products designated for preferred federal purchasing by 50%, requiring federal agencies to set goals and milestones for biobased purchasing and using scorecards to keep track of their progress, requiring tracking and public reporting of biobased purchases by federal agencies, increasing support for small businesses that manufacture biobased products, updating and expanding biobased purchasing education and outreach programs, and requiring USD A to prepare a report to the President on job creation and the economic impact associated with the biobased products industry. The goal of the memorandum is to ensure that executive departments and agencies effectively execute Federal pro curem ent requirements for biobased products, including those requirements identified i n Executive Order 13514 and prescribed in the 2002 Farm Bill, as amended by the 2008 Farm Bill. Feature: On School Bus Fleets Experience With A Propane Conversion


Ron Latko, director of transportation and vehicle maintenance for Arizona's Mesa Unified School District, discusses his fleet's conversion from di esel to propane autogas with both the easy nonchalance of a pragmatist and the passion of a prophet. The fact is, shifting to propane made sense in terms of dollars and logistics, and the results of the switch would likely arouse passion in most fleet managers. "I have yet to find a downside," Latko says of the move to propane-powered buses. That's certainl y a strong endorsement of the technology, but let's look at specifics. The fleet in Mesa - the state's largest single public school district - contains more than 500 buses, each of which averages about 15,500 miles per year. The service life of a diesel-powered bus operating in Arizona is typically about 13 years, or 200,000 miles. Latko says the new propane buses will likely be in circulation longer than that, mainly because they run cleaner and more effici ently than diesel models. "We believe these engines will have a longer life, and we will get an additional three to five years," he tells N GT News. "In that case, the operating savings will be greater than the cost of the bus." The school district brought 21 propane wheelchair buses online in October 2011. These Blue Bird/Girardin vehicl es, which are outfitted with OEM-approved ROUSH CleanTech propane systems, accommodate 15 passengers and two wheelchair positions. Each unit cost $6,400 l ess than the identically configured di esel buses Mesa Unified purchased three years ago. Latko is also taking delivery of six 77-passenger Blue Bird/ROUSH propane buses this week. The units were $10,245 more expensive than the 72passenger conventional diesel buses that the fleet bought in 2009. Latko explains that he did not balk at the additional cost for the 77-seaters for two main reasons. First of all, model-year pri ce increases between 2009 and 2012 would have closed the gap between the propane and diesel models. Secondl y, if Mesa Unified had bought modelyear 2010 diesel buses, they would have required expensive equipment in order to meet new emissions standards. Read the full feature from NGT News here.

While the primary focus of this project is the advancement of static and possib ly quasidynamic charging, the Department of Energy (DOE) recognizes that the research and demonstration results of this FOA may contribute to the future development of dynamic charging capability. This project shall demonstrate wireless charging technology while being cost competitiv e and compliant with safety standards. For more information, see the full solicitation *** EPA's National Clean Diesel Campaign The NCDC opened a grant competition on April 20 to solicit proposals for the National Clean Diesel Funding Assistance Program funded through the Diesel Emissions Reduction (DERA) program. The total estimated funding for this competitiv e opportunity is approximately $20 million. The Request for Proposal (RFP) is posted here and on www.grants.gov. The NCDC website contains more information regarding clean diesel technologies, past awarded projects, and help ful tip s. The RFP will be open for approximately 45 days, closing on June 4, 2012. EPA plans to award funding through this competition in the Fall, 2012. This RFP has been updated from the most recent competition, so applicants are encouraged to carefully rev iew the RFP to ensure a thorough understanding of eligible projects and technologies.
