Summary

Philip Meyers independently started his certified public accounting company for which he wanted a small customer base. As his customer circle expanded, he employed Michael Morrison and the two worked together towards the company goal which resulted in Morrison being awarded partnership of the company. The company continued to expand despite minor setbacks and this led to the hiring of another CPA, Stephen Adams who was offered a generous salary and the partners intended to offer him a partnership in the future. During the first year, Adams performance greatly impressed the partners and by the end of second year he was responsible for employing one quarter of the firms clients. However, since they moved in, Mr. Adams wife had had issues settling in and soon he was also having difficulties coping with the day to day pressures which affected his performance. Before the end of the tax season, Mr. Adams gave his resignation to Mr. Meyers and Mr. Morrison. The partners were shocked to hear this because they felt that Mr. Adams had been given a lot of benefits along with the hope of a partnership for which he would have to make a financial commitment so as to buy it. Thus the partners asked him to give an explanation as to why he was resigning from his position. To this he replied that he couldnt afford to work for them anymore as his wife was spending money faster than he could earn and also because he wasnt yet offered a partnership in the firm which frustrated him. Even though Mr. Morrison and Mr. Meyers wanted Mr. Adams to stay, they told him that they still needed time to think over the proposition to offer him partnership. Mr. Adams did not tell the partners what he planned to do after he left, but a few days after the meeting with Mr. Adams, Mr. Morrison received a phone call from his client who told him that he received a letter from Mr. Adams asking him to switch to a firm which he was about to start. He even gave incentives such as much more affordable rates and efficient service than that of Meyers and Morrison. Both Mr. Morrison and Mr. Meyers felt shocked and betrayed to learn about this incident. By Yumna Abbas, Yousuf Motiwala, Noor irfan and Sana Saleem.
