WASC Committee Visits DBHS to Observe Campus

COLUMN ONE

Apollo Night to be Hosted this Friday

The visiting WASC committee is composed of volunteers from various school districts in California. All of the volunteers are involved in the education field. Elizabeth Lee Asst. News Editor A committee from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges visited Diamond Bar High School from Sunday, February 21, through today, February 24. The committee will give their preliminary report and suggestions for DBHS after school in the gym today, from 3 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. DBHS will know the final results of the WASCs visitation around June. All stakeholders, such as DBHS staff members, Walnut Valley Unified School district board members, students, and parents are invited to attend this presentation. The purpose of the WASC committees visit is to ensure the accuracy of DBHS WASC report for the accreditation process, which verifies the credibility of the school. WASC is mainly responsible for accrediting all schools from kindergarten through college. The accreditation process involves a self-study process that allows the DBHS staff to determine the strengths and weaknesses of the school. DBHS WASC report was self-reflective and separate from the WASC committees report, which incorporates the committees evaluation of the school. This report was given to WASC prior to the committees visit. During the visit, the WASC committee tried to visit every classroom to observe all the class procedures on campus. The committee can suggest a one-year, three-year, or six-year term accreditation. These terms dictate when accreditation needs to be renewed. In addition to the assigned term, a mid-term review is also conducted to ensure that the school is approaching the goals set in the WASC report. Some of these goals include increasing the frequency of benchmark examinations for all curricular areas, giving parents and students access to the Aeries system, and using Blackboard for collaboration among stakeholders. Self-study co-coordinators Jennifer Bravo and Julian Rodriguez, who are in charge of overseeing the composition of DBHS WASC report, stated, Honestly, we want our school to shine as we welcome visitors to our campus. We want the visiting committee to see our school for all that it is. As for the standards, we have always addressed the standards in our curriculum. We are just making it a little easier for a visitor, who may only be in your class for a few minutes, to find the standard for today. We are also very proud of the hard work that all teachers and faculty put into developing new [Expected School wide Learning Results]. For the composition of the DBHS self-study WASC report, the schools staff worked to analyze the school in order to answer WASC criterion questions. Each teacher was assigned to two different groups that answered an assigned set of WASC criterion questions. Every teacher belonged to one Home Group based on his or her teaching subject and

to a separate Focus Group. Each Focus Group focused on a specific criterion such as assessment, curriculum, instruction, leadership, and student support. DBHS staff members also met with parents to keep them informed in the WASC report process and to solicit their input on Late Start days. Students were randomly selected to be interviewed by DBHS staff members during the composition of the report. This really was a

collective process, emphasized Rodriguez. He added, Weve reaffirmed that were doing very good things in this school. Bravo and Rodriguez said, We expect a successful accreditation because we are a good school and we are doing great things here at DBHS. We also did an honest and thorough examination of our school and sincerely reflected on how we can continue to improve. We think those things will be obvious to our visiting team and result in a successful accreditation.

Link Crew Holds Candy Land-Themed Freshmen Remix

SPEAK: There were approximately 20 different clubs and organizations at the Freshmen Remix, including Invisible Children, Key Club, and Yearbook. Jennifer Wang Contributing Staff Writer Diamond Bar High Schools Link Crew held their annual Freshmen Remix in the gym on Friday, February 12, during third and fourth period. The purpose of the Freshmen Remix was to reintroduce freshmen to clubs and activities they can be involved in during their years [at DBHS], explained Link Crew advisor Mary Gaxiola. The theme of this years orientation was Candy Land. We had more decorations, clubs, student-led performances, and helpers this time. The students were able to really connect, said Gaxiola. I am glad I got to attend Freshmen Remix because I was able to learn more about the school clubs and programs in an entertaining way, stated freshmen Shirley Zheng. All Male Dance Crew, Marquis, Varsity Song, DBHS Dance Team, and One Take performed at the Freshmen Remix along with two DBHS students who performed with glow sticks. Link Crew members presented skits on how to do well in school. Members of the organizations on campus encouraged students to tryout and sign up for their clubs. After the event, the students were allowed to ask questions about the clubs and organizations they were interested in. There were many people

who were genuinely interested in joining Peer Counseling. It felt good to have the chance to help them, said junior Shane Lee, a Peer Counseling Activities Director. The event was organized by 25 students who were mostly Link Crew leaders. Staff members Gabriel Alguilar, Chelsea Grunseth, Petria Gonzales, and Mary Gaxiola supervised and made sure everything ran smoothly. Freshmen were able to participate in games in which they popped balloons and guessed the number of M&Ms in a jar. The Perfect Neighbor Pro: Germany Purchases Stolen Bank Data
Sharon Lin Editorial Editor In a time of such economic uncertainty, many cities are sacrificing their overall environment for economic growth. The City of Diamond Bar, however, is striving to maintain its quality in order to cater to its residents. About a month ago, the Diamond Bar City Council, in a 3-0 decision, unanimously voted on an ordinance that bans live entertainment in the citys new businesses by amending the municipal code. Not only will this benet the city in the future, but it will provide its residents with a reassurance that the quality environment of Diamond Bar will not be compromised. The ordinance is a product of a battle that the City of Diamond Bar had with Scribbles Grille and Restaurant, located in North Diamond Bar, back in 2006. After neighbors led numerous complaints against heightened underage drinking, assault, theft, and vandalism stemming from Scribbles, the city fought to close the business down. In an effort to prevent the chaos that had risen from Scribbles, council members devised a plan that would maintain a certain level of peace in Diamond Bar while also catering to the needs of its residents. The ordinance is not too restrictive like many believe it to be. The limitations put forth are very reasonable as they allow for a moderate amount of live entertainment. Under the ordinance, live entertainment pertains to performances such as musical shows and the usage of disc jockeys. Businesses such as Acapulco Mexican Restaurant and Oak Tree Lanes, that have provided live entertainment before the ordinance was enacted, will still be permitted to continue providing live entertainment. The intentions of this ban were meant to regulate the means by which live entertainment is conducted, not eradicate it altogether. In addition to banning night clubs in the city, bars, cocktail lounges, and taverns will not be permitted to hold dancing or singing events, while institutions such as schools and churches will be exempt from the ordinance. Under the ban, the number of events a group or an individual can hold at community centers such as cultural centers, clubs, lodges, and hotels is limited to once every 90 days. Because the ban does not eliminate live entertainment altogether, residents can still enjoy what the city has to offer. Perhaps the most benecial component of the ban is the stability it ensures for the future. The ordinance guarantees that all residents, those who seek entertainment and those who seek a quiet environment, can benet from living in Diamond Bar. It is comforting to know that even during an economic downturn, the City of Diamond Bar will not sacrice the comfort of its residents for increased revenue. Ashley Ahn Asst. Feature Editor A disk containing stolen bank data from the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Company, or HSBC, holds enough information to prove that approximately 1,500 Germans are stashing millions of dollars in secret bank accounts across the border in Switzerland. These citizens were largely trying to evade tax payments on their savings. Germanys decision to purchase the disk will benet its government and its people. Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, has made the right decision by purchasing the information in order to build a case against the tax evaders. This illustrates how seriously the German government takes tax evasion and how far it will go to convict those who break the law, even at the expense of its international relations. Herve Falciani, a former specialist for the HSBC bank in Geneva, offered to sell the data he had stolen to Germany for $3.5 million. Purchasing the data from the criminal may be illegal,

Purchasing the data may be illegal, but the data will help German officials press charges against tax evaders and show future lawbreakers the gravity of tax evasion.
but the data will help German ofcials press charges against tax evaders. Because the Swiss Finance Ministry refused to cooperate with Germany in order to retrieve the data, the German government had to make a decision that was best for their

country. The tax evaders actions cannot go unpunished. Their willful disregard of German law requires that the German government take action against them, to show future lawbreakers the gravity of tax evasion. If Germany does not put its foot down now, others will only be encouraged to try and find a way around paying their taxes in the future. The money that is not being received from tax evaders is not only taking away from the governments budget, but also causing a delay in other sectors that are awaiting improvement. The unpaid dues are taking away from Germanys future plans to mitigate other issues that the German people are facing, like unemployment and poverty. By purchasing the

data, Germany may gain $277 million in nes. Although Germany may be viewed as an aggressor against international and Swiss law, the German government had no choice but to overlook Swiss protest and make their move in purchasing the data. After mulling over the pros and cons of the situation, Germany was wedged into a corner where they could make only one of two choices: abide by the law and let criminals get away, or buy the illegal information and unveil the tax evaders. Germany was forced to choose the latter. In Germany s case the disk had to be bought for the good of the German government and its people. While there is a risk in making any decision, Germany pragmatically put the greater good before the textbook answer when solving its problem, a true show of care and concern for its people.

Con: Germany Purchases Stolen Bank Data

Christine Song Staff Writer Recently, an informant offered to sell data stolen from Swiss bank accounts to Germany. The data would prove that around 1,500 German citizens are cheating their government out of tax money. German ofcials decided to buy the information for $3.5 million. By purchasing the bank data, Germany illegally invaded the privacy of the bank clients to uphold the law. Germany should not have bought the stolen data because not only was it against Swiss law, it also demeaned Germany. Negotiating with a thief was not Germanys only option; there was an alternative to catching the lawbreakers without breaking the law. Swiss authorities feel that Germany has infringed on the privacy of the bank clients by purchasing the data. If Germany is pursuing those who broke the law, then it should not be doing so illegally; that is hypocritical of

Eye of the Editors

Studying a foreign language is a method to broaden horizons, to expose students to different cultures and make them global citizens. Unfortunately, many students at Diamond Bar High Schoolespecially those studying Chinese and Korean use the study of a foreign language as an opportunity to be lazy, as native speakers study their own language. An overwhelming majority of DBHS students studying Chinese and Korean are native speakers. There are only a handful of students in the entire Chinese and Korean departments who are not ethnically Chinese and Korean, respectively. In fact, there is not even one nonethnic Chinese student in the Advanced Placement Chinese class. This trendof studying a native language as a foreign languageis not exclusive to DBHS; schools across the country are being plagued by unmotivated students who refuse to learn a new language, rather choosing to enroll in a class that will guarantee a good grade and little effort. According to College Board, a staggering 92% of students who took the AP Chinese Language and Culture exam declared themselves to be of Asian heritage. These Asian students average score was 4.8 out of a possible 5, compared to 2.9, the average score of Caucasian students. The purpose of studying a foreign language is to facilitate communication and gain an appreciation for other cultures. Neither of these things are acquired by native speakers when they study that language; native speakers are already able to communicate prociently and are already familiar with the culture. Enrolling in a foreign language class when the language is not, in fact, foreign, shows a narrow-minded approach to international awareness. DBHS, instead of encouraging students to learn new subjects, facilitates this unfair trend. The Korean language, which ranks 15th among foreign languages taught in the U.S. (behind Hebrew and Portuguese), is offered as a class at DBHS, because of the large Korean population on campus. When the majority of a class natively speaks that language as is the case in all of DBHS Chinese and Korean classes the expected standard in that class is unbelievably high; even in a rst-year class, students are almost expected to be somewhat procient in the language. Nonnative speakers are deterred from taking the class because of their disadvantage. DBHS needs to encourage students to pursue languages that they have not previously learned at home. For those students who obstinately insist on studying their native language, DBHS and organizations like College Board need to follow the example of many colleges by offering (and making certain that native speakers enroll in) classes exclusively for native speakers. Like Mount San Antonio College, which offers a Spanish for the Spanish Speaking class, DBHS should offer similar classes. These classes will focus on grammar and vocabulary, ensuring that native speakers learn something new and that nonnative speakers can learn the language without the inherent disadvantage they face with the current system. Instead of using foreign language classes to explore new cultures, many students at DBHS use them to be lazy and learn a subject with which they are already familiar; and administrators and teachers, instead of encouraging students to learn new languages, facilitate this lassitude. While demonstrating a lack of motivation, these students collectively create an unfair environment, where non-native students are terrified to take Chinese and Korean classes because of the disadvantage that they will face.

If Germany is pursuing those who broke the law, then it should not be doing so illegally; that is hypocritical and contradictory of the German government.
the German government. For Germany to enforce its law through illegal and hypocritical methods is bad enough, but working with thieves

relegates the country to being a thief itself; Germany should not have stooped so low because collaborating with thieves was not its only solution. G e r m a n o ff i c i a l s could have negotiated w i t h S w i s s o ff i c i a l s and avoided the legal complications. Even though Germany would have had to use a less convenient method to obtain a list of the tax evaders, it would have been done in a l e g a l m a n n e r. T h i s would have placed the lawbreakers in a situation in which they would not be able to argue their innocence. However, because Germany decided to pursue the lawbreakers through illegal means, its case against the lawbreakers can and will be

looked upon as contradictory. A nation that upholds its laws illegally cannot expect its citizens to follow those laws. Because Germany has decided to buy the stolen information, relationships between Germany and Switzerland have become estranged. There was a much better alternative to solving the issue. However, because Germany ignored the alternative, it can no longer work with Switzerland and will have to resort to consorting with thieves to catch future lawbreakers. The country has narrowed its options and backed itself into a corner with illegal methods as its only way out. Not only have the German officials debased G e r m a n y, t h e y h a v e a l s o shown that there is a loophole in the German laws concerning thievery.

The groups imprudence has created a diplomatically sensitive issue during disastrous times, distracted media and world attention away from the struggle to aid distressed Haitians, and wasted the time and energy of Haitian parents and service workers. Haiti, a country plagued by sex trafcking, is reasonably reacting to the missionaries kidnappings by detaining them due to a heightened zero tolerance policy on suspected illegal trafcking as a means of protecting the children of Haiti. The Haitian government is sending out the message that the country is still operating under law and that people cannot come in and do whatever they think is best. In hopes of combating deceitful trafckers from taking advantage of the disarray by snatching some of the vulnerable 300,000 orphans before the quake and the countless ones orphaned afterwards, Haitis government has already tightened adoption procedures. In the missionaries case, they had gone too far when they felt that they were exempt from Haitis trafcking policy. The resulting detainment has forced Haitians to deal with even more intrusive media coverage and Silsby displayed an appalling amount of ignorance persuading the parents that their actions were for the best. The missionaries had told the parents they were going to give them a free education and bring them back, but the group had advertised its nancially unstable adoption operation on the Internet. More disappointingly, the group told the media the kids were orphaned or abandoned at rst before their actual origins had been discovered. The group has failed to recognize the trauma it has afflicted upon the children due to a lack of preparation, and instead of giving them better opportunities, the missionaries have only forced the children, some of whom are not even orphans, into a temporary Australian orphanage in the Dominican Republic and away from their tight-knit communities. The denseness of the missionaries has been disappointing for the American image as it consequentially elicits attention away from more important issues. If this group was genuinely trying to help the Haitian children, it should not have lied about its plans as often as it had. Although the missionaries denied that they had bad intentions, the results of their actions have certainly not been acts of charity and their motives are clearly not as pure as they have claimed.

The Best Military Strategy

Katie Lee Asst. Editorial Editor In his State of the Union speech, President Barack Obama reafrmed his campaign pledge to end the dont ask, dont tell policy, which prevents superiors from asking military recruits about their sexual orientation and from allowing homosexual servicemen to openly state their sexual orientation, declaring that military servicemen should not have to compromise their integrity. However, Obama does not realize that lifting the policy will only bring more problems to the United States Armed Forces. If the policy is abandoned, hostility and unnecessary harassment will ensue. First implemented in 1993, the DADT policy has stopped the controversial issue of gay rights from entering into the world of the armed forces. By removing the policy, the differing attitudes of homosexuality will inevitably disrupt the order and discipline of servicemen. It is a bad move by Obama to search for steps to completely lift the policy because it will bring needless trouble to both those who are homosexual and those who are not. The DADT policy also prevents disorder for those who choose to be open about homosexuality. Servicemen who are not homosexual may feel uncomfortable working with those who are, and these conflicting views will bring disarray to the armed forces. If homosexual servicemen are allowed to serve openly, many servicemen will be less willing to enlist in the rst place especially since the majority come from conservative backgrounds, and thus, there will be a shortage of new servicemen. The DADT policy has also stopped superiors from wrongly interrogating any homosexual servicemen. However, if it is repealed, many servicemen may be deliberately treated unfairly steps to completely lift the policy, Obama should be more concerned with the physical productivity of the military. There are two wars going onone in Iraq and the other in Afghanistanthat Obama should be more concerned about rather than social politics, such as this controversial battle of homosexuality. The DADT policy has kept the military in line so far and has proven its adequacy. It is foolish to bring the war of politics and its controversy of homosexuality into the armed forces. We should only be concerned with keeping the soldiers prepared, safe, healthy, and ready for battle, which is exactly what the DADT policy achieves. There is no reason to change a procient and long-lasting policy. No matter what the circumstances are, all social groups, including both homosexuals and straights, will be better off with the retainment of the DADT policy. If Americans want the armed forces to work efciently, the DADT policy is the best and most reasonable option there is.

We should only be concerned with keeping the soldiers prepared, safe, healthy, and ready for battle, which is exactly what the procient and longlasting DADT policy achieves.
due to their sexual orientation. Most importantly, homosexual servicemen will no longer have the choice to stay discreet because if asked by a superior, they will have to respond with a truthful answer. Instead of searching for

more court proceedings. Nine out of the ten missionaries are still expected to escape charges because they claim to have been unaware of the violations and the unordered paperwork. However, the fairness of this speculation is questionable because Dominican ofcials had warned them of the needed permission beforehand. This leaves the leader, Laura Silsby, who planned the mission while acknowledging its potential legal complications and the possible foreclosure of her planned orphanage, still facing allegations.

The Thrill of the Ride

Marcel Boubion Staff Writer When asked what kind of vehicles Toyota produces, most people would describe the cars as comfortable, fuel efcient, safe, and reliable. Now other automotive companies are coming out with their own line of fuel efcient and comfortable vehicles for the market. But Toyota still has the edge on companies like Ford and Chevy because, for decades, Toyota has produced hundreds of cars with a reliability on which most Americans can depend. It is almost like Toyota cannot stop their cars from ying onto the street (actually they cannot). In fact, a recall was issued last month to stop cars from doing just that. Eight models have stopped production because people were so overwhelmed with the new technology in these cars. The rst incidents of sudden acceleration sent a thrill to every Toyota owner in 2003. People were so excited with the way the cars accelerated that they kept going until a pole stopped them. Now, the corporation is halting production and increasing work efforts in order to tone down the

computer systems might be responsible for these sudden accelerations. It is a good thing someone was there to point out this possibility; now more consumers can understand what is so great about Toyota cars. Toyota tried to cover it up saying it must be the oor mats, but now that the cat is out of the bag, owners can fully appreciate To y o t a s g e n i u s innovation. The company i s n o t stopping with only Corolla a nd Cam ry models; they are extending the thrill of not being able to control cars to the Priuses too. It seems as though Toyota is trying to send a message out to its competitors: it cannot be stopped. This will hold true as long as consumers are staying informed and making wise decisions when they are purchasing a car. Toyota was even kind enough to make a list of tips for potential customers: Tip One: Dont let the recalls scare you. 5-star crash test safety ratings werent made for nothing, right? Tip Two: Brakes are for chumps. If youre buying a car to get to places slowly, then you are better off getting rides from grandma. Tip Three: When you are walking through the car lot dont be startled if cars start turning on. It is probably just another computer failure. We will give all the cars new seat covers and they will be ne. If consumers follow these three tips, they are likely to have an enjoyable time shopping for a new car. Toyota guarantees a ride that no other company can matchfrom the car lot all the way to the brick wall they are going to run into. The technology in Toyotas line of vehicles is so advanced that drivers literally will not be able to stop their cars from accelerating. This kind of excitement would be too hazardous for any American company, but Toyota is a Japanese car company, so it must be safe.

robbed
Austin Kong Contributing Staff Writer I have recently been going through a phase where it seems like nothing is going my way. I knew that coming into Diamond Bar High School as a freshman would not be easy, but I would have never guessed how dishonest some students could be. Yes I said it. DBHS students are dishonest, and I have two experiences to prove it. The rst time I witnessed the dishonesty of DBHS students was in the boys locker room. I was in a good mood that day because I was wearing my new Levis Jeans. I got dressed and looked forward to an exciting soccer practice, but when it was over, I opened my locker and saw that my jeans were gone! Oh and by the way, I had thirty dollars in the pockets, too. My second experience concerns my stolen wallet which had fty dollars in it. It was stolen from my PE locker when I was at soccer practice, again. This time it was partially my fault because I left a shirt hanging out of the locker, a magnet for thieves. The day after my wallet was stolen, I was sitting in class thinking about the money I lost, then a T.A. walked into the room and handed my teacher my ID card! In case you havent caught on, my ID was in my stolen wallet. This is the equivalent of robbing a bank and handing back the keys to the vault because you have no use for it. I cant control the choices that other people make, but it bothers me that some people are okay with doing these things. I have lost eighty dollars, and still have Super Bowl bets to pay.

Ryan DeVore Sports Editor High School. They say its the greatest four years of your life, lled with fun, games, and memories that will last a lifetime. Well, when you go to a school like Diamond Bar, its not exactly Disneyland on a warm summer day. Youve got to work your tail off. Yet, when you feel like the pressure is getting to you, its your friends that pick you right upa great group of friends I am lucky to have made. Ive undoubtedly been fortunate in more ways than one regarding the people I have met. Freshmen year on the golf team was when I met my close friend Paul. Although he kind of freaked me out at rst with his extremely outgoing and frivolous nature, he grew to become a great inuence in my life. Although not always in a good way, Paul has most importantly introduced me into the world of being late. Thanks to his impeccable timing, I am almost never on time now, thanks man With Paul came Gavin. For those that dont really know Gavin, its honestly a shame. A guy that appears to be a simple man of few words is anything but that. Although he is a man of a mere 5 feet 8 inches he has the attitude that no one dares mess with. He has taught me to not take any crap from anyone. Thanks a lot. Jake and Ryker are two guys that I never imagined becoming friends with. Ryker being the football captain and Jake being the nerd of my history class, I came to realize that High School stereotypes are nothing but B.S. Although Jake has helped me improve my comical side with his never ending supply of jokes, Ryker has taught me a great deal of self-discipline and determination with his tremendous work ethic. But together the two have taught me that you can have the abs, but you have to have the jokes to back it up. Thanks. Alongside my closest friends are the teachers and coaches that helped me through the years. Coach Watkins has helped me develop not only as a golfer but as an individual. My teachers Mrs. Clark, Mr. Moran and Ms. Chen all in their different ways continue to remind me that there are great teachers out there. I cannot thank these people enough. Then theres journalism. Im not sure if words can describe some of the characters that are in that class. From guy-talk with Marcel and Kevin, to struggling to nd earplugs when Rachel, Laura, and Megan are around, Ive had a memorable four years in the program. Thanks Ms. Chen and Mr. Roubian for all youve done. Well, as I gear up to exit the gates of Diamond Bar High forever, I feel that I am more than ready to venture off into the world and begin my life on my own. As I leave for college, I take with me a piece of each of my friends. I can only hope that underclassmen and upperclassmen alike can discover the friendships that I have been blessed to have made.

The Stinking Rose

Justin Kong Feature Theme Editor The ubiquitous odor of garlic pervaded throughout the entire, dimly-illuminated restaurant. With its carnival and vampiresque theme, The Stinking Rose provided a quiet, yet unusually funky ambiance to create an overall unique eating experience. My friends and I arrived at the restaurant in Beverly Hills with high hopes, excited to eat in a restaurant that had such a disgustingly unappealing name. The menu showed a very large list of foods that were almost all infused with garlic. The restaurant provided free, freshly baked bread to begin our meal, and to try something new, we decided to order the special Garlic Soaking in a Hot Tub to eat with the breada decision we did not regret. The bread was crisp, warm, and baked to a golden brown and the roasted garlic, along with some virgin olive oil, complemented the bread perfectly. The waiter was quick to bring our appetizers of popcorn calamari and garlic french fries. Adequately sized, both dishes provided a semi-salty, and toasty flavor, along with a crunchy texture that caused the plate to disappear within minutes! Our mouths watered as we received our entres. Our orders included my perfect, mediumrare prime rib, my friends baked, vegetable-lled Portobello mushroom, and my other friends colorful, neon ravioli. We each devoured our respective, visually- appealing meals and the meat seemed to melt in my mouth. Our eating utensils seemed to y from plate to plate as we began to eat e a c h other s food: t h e mushr o o m w a s v e r y juicy and the ravioli was creamy. Dessert was Gilroys Famous Garlic Ice Cream covered in caramel sauce, which, despite its name, was absolutely delicious and sweet! The extreme use of garlic, surprisingly, had no effect on the restaurants cleanliness and the smell of garlic became unnoticeable. Although our bill was pricey, our amazing dinner was completely worth every penny the appetizers, dessert, and roasted garlic sides were under $10 each; the mushroom and ravioli were about $18 each, and the large cut prime rib reached about $35. Despite the price, I would highly recommend this restaurant to everyone!

There are many successful brand names that are familiar worldwide. Some companies, however, are just unsatised with occupying only one general industry. As a result, several companies came up with completely incongruous products. Sanrio: Hello Kitty seems to be striving to dominate every known industry. The character originally appeared on accessories and stationary, but this character can now be found almost everywhere. EVA Airway Corporation even made a Hello Kitty jet. Frito-Lay: They may have

thought that since people seemed to love the cheesy taste of Cheetos, it would be a great idea to be able to smear that cheesy taste onto your lips. Problem was, no one really liked how the cheese-avored lip balm tasted. NASCAR: NASCAR wanted to increase their female viewer count, so they thought that there would be no better way to attract women than to release a series of racecar-related romance novels. NASCAR was right, it worked. For some brands, extensions have proven to be quite successful, but most of the time, however, these extensions just seem to be too weird.

No Deposit Closet
Matthew Hapenney Contributing Staff Writer Holly Liu Contributing Staff Writer Closet shopping is an opportunity for people to mix up their everyday wardrobe without spending any of that hard-earned cash. When you shop in someone elses closet, you are not only guratively, but also literally, stepping into their shoes. Not only is it a good way to mix up your style of clothes, but it is also a great way to become closer with friends. As I rummaged through my friends bureau and closet, I found many interesting and uniquely designed t-shirts. Unfortunately, these shirts did not t me well; they were too short. My friend suggested a v-neck, and even though I am not a big fan of them, I decided to wear it. Its something new. I did not have a belt. I searched and searched, but to no avail. Then, I looked for a wristband or watch, but later decided to do without. I kept my own watch on, however, because I could not completely let go of the sense of familiarity. I also decided to keep my favorite gold cross necklace with me. I pick out several shirts, but they dont t properly, what a bummer. After some more searching, I nally nd an interesting black top that is perfect for a day at school. Luckily it matches with a funky green and gray jacket that I selected. My outfit itself is quite bland but with accessories, it will be more unique. I am trying to nd something that can subtly complement the outt. It wasnt too difcult of a task to nd just the right one. A necklace with several layers of chains added on to the outt and was all I really need to nish the look.

Wearing jeans are the norm. In this new closet, I had the option to choose from white, black, or blue jeans. I chose blue because I gured you couldnt go wrong with the traditional denim blue. Although they were blue, they felt and looked different from my own jeans. I was leaving my comfort zone and it felt incredibly strange to wear someone elses clothing.

I only have a small selection to choose from. They all t me but I already have similar styles; its hard to make up my mind, but in the end I settle for skinny jeans though they are slightly baggy on me. Since we both are two different sizes, it is a difcult task to nd a nice pair of jeans. I would much rather wear my own jeans than take a pair of my friends.

It is only natural for music to change as time progresses, so many artists of the past have been forgotten. However, not all music has been lost through time. Repeat?
Kevin Acciani Asst. Sports Editor The same question is running through the minds of every basketball fan: can the Los Angeles Lakers repeat last years amazing championship? Or will a team like the Cleveland Cavaliers upend the reigning champions? There is no denite answer to these questions, at least not until one team hoists the Larry OBrien Trophy after winning it all. One can look at it on both sides. For one, the Cavaliers have the best record in the entire National Basketball Association. The Cavs also swept the Lakers in the regular season. On the ip side, the Cavaliers never do well in the playoffs. The Lakers also play in a much tougher conference than the Cavaliers, so of course their record is not as good. The Western Conference has proven to be much stronger than the Eastern, and the West has given the Lakers some tough challenges. Still, for now, the Lakers stand on top of it all. The Lakers could have done one thing to solidify their dominance over the rest of the league, but they missed a big opportunity. The trade deadline expired on February 18, and the Lakers were unable to make a big move to improve their squad. Although their lineup has been solid all year, the Lakers needed to upgrade at either center or point guard. At center, Andrew Bynum has proven to be reliable for a solid 15 points and eight rebounds per game; but those stats are not nearly good enough to prove that he is able to take on the leagues elite centers like Orlandos Dwight Howard. The Lakers also need to make an improvement at the point guard position, but that can be done without making a trade. Long-time starter Derek Fisher has been declining steadily this season, and he is now averaging less than eight points and three assists per game. Even though Fisher has been a favorite of Lakers fans for many years, it is time to go in a different direction. Jordan Farmar is the answer. Even though he averages ten less minutes per game than Fisher, his scoring average is higher. But what Farmar brings to the table is more important than just scoring. The best aspect of Farmars game is his defense. Since college, he has been a dominant defender who has consistently been able to shut down almost any player he faces. If the Lakers do not decide to go with Farmar, they have yet another acceptable option as point guard. Shannon Brown is nally stepping into the spotlight. Earlier in the year, he did not play very much, but he has been taking on a bigger role lately, especially after Kobe Bryant was injured. Against the Golden State Warriors, Brown was able to quiet all of his critics by scoring a career-high 27 points and ten rebounds, the rst double-double of his career. Brown is an athletic playmaker, although his defense needs a lot of work. If the Lakers had been able to make a trade before the deadline hit, they would easily be the best team in basketball. For now, though, the title is up for grabs, and almost every team has a shot at it. If the Cavaliers and Lakers play each other in the NBA Finals, which is expected, it could be one of the best playoff series we will ever see. My prediction: the Cavliers will beat the Lakers in seven games. Ashley Ahn Asst. Feature Editor The 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games started on February 12 and are planned to end on February 28. There is a large variety of sporting events that will appeal to all types of audiences: some very well known, such as the ski jump, and others not so much, like curling. So far, through all the events, victories have been celebrated, tears have been shed, and history has been made. Twelve days lled with excitement have passed and four days of the unexpected are still to come. As each day goes on, the anticipation rises. To commence the Winter Olympics, the opening ceremony provided viewers and athletes alike with a fantastic display of reworks and the lighting of the Olympic cauldron. Apolo Ohno is striving to earn the most medals in the winter Olympics out of all the American athletes. As of February 19, he has seven of events. Some attempt to awe, and others dream to set records, but in Lindsey Vonns case, an injury was the obstacle she needed to overcome. Two weeks before the start of the Winter Olympics, Vonn was hurt during training and suffered a deep muscle bruise. Questions were asked about whether she would be at her best during the games, but she has certainly proved that she is. Winning a gold medal in alpine skiing, Vonns determination proved to be outstanding. Alongside White and Vonn, Hannah Kearney, Evan Lysacek, Seth Wescott, and Shani Davis have all won gold medals and contributed to the U.S. lead in the Olympic standings. The stiff competition and rigorous physical activity are evidently challenging for all of the welltrained athletes. Years of preparation have boiled down to these nal days, but only time will tell which country will come out on top.

These teams include the top eight ranked teams; among them are University of Kansas (rst), University of Kentucky (third), and Duke University (8th). Their outstanding, wellknown coaches, like Dukes Mike Krzyzewski, and regular post-season appearances give them an advantage of experience and condence. However, there is another group of teams that people should watch: the underdogs of this years tournament season that could cause those infamous upsets. Teams like the University of Wisconsin (13th), the University of Texas (14th), Gonzaga University (15th), Brigham Young University (16th), Butler University (17th), and University of Pittsburgh (24th) are capable of surprising people. These are the midmajor schools that may not have superstars but rather

Rachel Halpert Asst. Sports Editor Now that Super Bowl XLIV is history and baseball season has yet to begin, the next big event in sports is the National Collegiate Athletic Association Mens Division I Basketball Tournament. Also commonly referred to as the Big Dance or March Madness, this is the most exciting time in college basketball. As all 347 teams in the nation nish the regular season, only the top 65 will be accepted into the tournament. March Madness is known for its excitement, upsets, the rise of the underdogs, and all-around good athletes. In recent years, upsets have been more frequent because the best players from the bigtime schools move up to the National Basketball Association when they are only freshmen or sophomores. Thus, it is easier for smaller schools to succeed in this tournament since they have more experience than a big name school with many

balanced teams that have the skills and consistency to defeat a higher ranked school. Since 1939, when the NCAA was founded, the University of California Los Angeles has earned the most championship titles (10 of the 11 were with the legendary Coach John Wooden). Unfortunately, Southern California basketball fans will be disappointed this year because UCLA will not make the usual top ranks and the University of Southern California will be ineligible due to numerous violations from the previous season. The 2010 tournament will begin its rst round games on Thursday, March 18. This years championships will be held at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana, on Monday, April 5. Fans will nd out if Kansas can stay on top, or if underdogs like Gonzaga or Butler will rise to the occasion and take the championship title this year. Either way, March Madness is expected to be full of action and surprise.

Athlete of the Month: Alex Imahara

Katie Lee Asst. Editorial Editor Senior Alex Imahara, a devoted member of varsity wrestling, is a versatile student athlete. His passion does not stop at wrestling; he is also the band president, the Inter-Organizational Council representative for Future Business Leaders of America, and the boys representative for Girls League. Along with all his demanding extracurricular activities and sports, including both wrestling and baseball, Imahara proves to be a great role model as he maintains an impressive grade point average of 3.9. Not only is Imahara the sole band president but he also is in the Wind Ensemble and plays the alto saxophone. However, through prioritization and time management, Imahara manages to efciently balance his studies, extracurricular activities, and wrestling. His keen devotion to wrestling started when coach Rob Wagner came to inspire the freshmen to accept new challenges; he is now a 4-year member of varsity wrestling. Coach Wagner came to us and told us that wrestling is the most difcult sport and takes a lot of dedication but it also teaches you how to be dedicated to anything in the future, commented Imahara. Although the sport is both demanding a n d challenging, the level of difculty never stopped I m a h a r a s s e e m i n g l y l i m i t l e s s perseverance. In addition to the motivation he gained through wrestling, Imahara also found a group of friends from the wrestling team on whom he could always count, even outside the wrestling room. The environment is really nice because [...] were all like a big family, noted Imahara. His favorite part about wrestling is the hard work, which has taught him to persist and focus better in everything he does. One of his known specialties in this difcult sport is the leg ride. There have been certain situations in matches where it doesnt look like I can come through but I push myself farther than I thought could be possible and it changes the outcome. Now, when I feel like giving up in other things in life, I push myself and I achieve more, stated Imahara. His academic goal is to attend the University of Southern California because it offers the best jobs right after graduation. This year, the biggest inspiration for Imahara and his team was the unfortunate death of junior Brandon Riley due to his failing health. The whole team dedicated the entire year to the former varsity member and friend. Hes the reason why we pushed so hard, added Imahara. After every win, when the referee holds my hand up, I point to the sky for Brandon. Alex Imahara proves to be a truly inspiring student athlete.
