    During the course of HIV infection, detection occurs in three stages. The first stage is the incubation period where HIV is present but not detectable. In the second primary infection stage, third generation tests can detect HIV antibodies and some tests can detect HIV antigens. In the final complete seroconversion stage, second generation tests detect HIV antibodies and some tests can detect both HIV antibodies and antigens.
