Outline
Definition of Microbes Extremophiles Roles of microbes in animals, plants, food processing,

environment and human

5/29/12

Why Biomedical Science?

To study the causes of diseases To create medicine for diseases that are still without cure

5/29/12

Why is Biomedical Science important?

It teaches us to use technology to analyze data related to

diseases and pathogens problems

It teaches us to apply our knowledge and solve these

Definition of Microbes
Prokaryotic cells, can only be seen under microscope Eg. Bacteria, yeast, protists, algae, viruses

5/29/12

Extremophiles
Live under extreme conditions Eg. Very high temperature(thermophiles), very low

temperature(psychrophiles), extreme pressure(piezophiles), extreme pH conditions(acidophile, alkaliphiles), without oxygen(anarobes), no light to support photosynthesis(oligotrophs)

Roles of Microbes in Animals, Plants and Food Processing

Animals - there is presence of microbes in the

caecum of rodents - produce cellulase to digest cellulose

Plants - there is presence of microbes in the

legume root nodules. - nitrogen fixation - eg. Rhizobium sp.

Food - yeast

- fermentation

Roles of Microbes in Environment and Human

Environment - Maintain soil fertility

- Clean up dead, organic material - Nitrogen cycle - Extraction of minerals from ores - Primary source of food for marine life
Human - Eg. E. coli

- In the large intestine - Water reabsorption

Conclusion
Microbes have existed millions of years ago and they still

exist up till now. Although some are able to cause sickness, such as malaria, yet they still play a very important role in human, plants, animals and also help to maintain the environment.
