Trauma is an unexpected occurrence. A sudden injury, the accompanying hospitalization and resulting recovery can be an anxiety-provoking, frightening and frustrating time. Trauma care is a vital component of a communitys emergency response system. Quality care of trauma patient depends on committed people in a variety of health care occupations along with state of the art technology and equipment.The Inova Regional Trauma Center at Inova Fairfax Hospital is dedicated to providing world class trauma care at the only Level 1 Trauma Center in Northern Virginia designated by the State of Virginia and verified by Inova Regional Trauma Center at Inova Fairfax Hospital is proud to offer the 2012 Trauma Externship Program to pre-professional students considering careers in medicine, nursing and other allied healthcare professions.The Trauma Externship offers participants the opportunity to work closely with the Trauma Services multi-disciplinary team including trauma surgeons, nurses, social workers, physical therapists, and other providers within the system. Externs will also join the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department for a ride-along experience responding to emergency calls. During the program, participants will interact directly with trauma surgeons and will be present during daily rounds, patient assessments, emergency resuscitation and surgical procedures. This full time two week commitment is offered to give students insight and experience within the continuum of trauma care.
