GPS Signal Strengths

-121 dBm

Autonomous GPS

Strong: -121 dBm to -142 dBm

Autonomous GPS operates in strong signal strength environments where receivers are said to have a clear view of the satellites. Under these conditions there are no obstructions in direct line of sight from the GPS antenna to the satellites and there are no reflected or multipath satellite signals present. Examples of such environments include deserts, oceans, open fields and low rise residential areas.

Weak: -142 dBm to -150 dBm

-142 dBm

Assisted GPS

Assisted GPS operates at weak signal strengths where the signal is too noisy to extract the navigation data. Examples of such environments include forests under dense wet foliage and various indoor environments near windows.

-150 dBm

Very Weak: -150 dBm to -160 dBm

Here receivers detect very weak reflected and multipath signals. Examples of such environments can be found within office buildings and multi-storey car parks in sight of outside windows and doors.

-160 dBm dBm = dBW + 30
