Fluid Mechanics I, Deadline: 6/3/91

1- When immersed in a uniform upstream velocity field U0 the long rectangular bar, shown in cross- section, causes a downstream wake idealized as shown with velocity U1 over a height 2h. Develop an expression for the x- component of the drag force per unit length Fx on the bar in terms of fluid density , U0, U1, and h and no other parameters. Assume the pressure is atmospheric everywhere on the control volume surface. Clearly show your control volume and any forces acting on the control volume in the given figure, and carefully apply the Reynolds transport form of any physical laws you apply to the control volume.

3- Consider the cart shown with steady-state conditions having been reached, i.e. the cart has filled to the point where the amount of water inside remains constant. The diameter of both outlets is Do. Determine the numerical value of
Do for which no force is needed for the cart to remain stationary when H2=2 H1 (as shown) assuming Dj

inviscid flow. Clearly indicate the control volume used and start from a statement of the Reynolds Transport Theorem if applying the momentum or conservation of mass equations. If you use the Bernoulli equation, show streamlines used.

4- The wye joint splits the pipe flow into equal amounts Q/2, which exit, as shown, a distance R0 from the axis. Neglect gravity and friction. Find an expression for the torque T about the x- axis required to keep the system rotating at angular velocity .
