Seminar Summary

Seminar Summary Chong Kang Cherng B1100963 Department of Psychology PSY 112 Miss Siew Ju Li

The seminar on 26th of March 2012 is about co-sleeping and solitary sleeping with babies.

The seminar covered the advantages and disadvantages of both sleeping style. Co-sleeping with babies refers to the behaviour parents sleeping with their baby or babies while solitary sleeping means the parents and the baby sleep in a different room. The advantages of co-sleeping are that they can ensure the safety of the babies, less crying during the night and better sleeping quality of babies. Research found that babies who sleep with their parents are more likely to be healthier and have higher self-esteem. The disadvantages are that the relationship of the parents might be affected and their sex life will also not be satisfying. The parents sleep will also be disturbed by the baby. Co-sleeping with new born baby may cause sudden infant death syndrome. The possible cause of sudden infant death syndrome was discussed during the seminar. The advantages of solitary sleeping included the low possibility of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and parents will not be affected as much as co-sleeping parents. While the disadvantages included poorer health, lower self-esteem and more night awakening and crying compared to babies who have co-sleeping behaviour with their parents. One of the speakers also included that baby with solitary sleeping behaviour will likely have their own comfort item when they sleep. The conclusion made in this seminar was that the sleeping style with a new-born baby is actually depends on the parents. In this seminar, I had learnt about some knowledge that I had never came into contact including how different sleeping style affect an individual and some other extra information. Other than that, using the speakers at the seminar as a bad role model, I also learnt that while giving a presentation, the speech given must be clear and direct, so I can ensure that my audiences can get what I am presenting and not easily distracted.
