CHASSIS-definition / description--Chassis is French term and was initially used to denote the frame or main struct ure of a vehicle.

For light vehicles of mono construction type having body integ ral with frame, it denotes the whole vehicle excluding the additional fitment in side the body. It the main mounting for all the components and also therefore kn own as carrying unit. A large number of designs in pressed steel frame form a skeleton on which engine , axle assemblies, transmission, steering mechaniosm, brakes and suspension memb ers are mounted . during the manufacturing process the body of the vehicle is al so bolted to the chassis. This combination of the body and the frame performs a variety of functions: 1. It absorbs the reactions from the movements of engine and axle. 2. Receives the reaction forces of the wheels in acceleration and braking. 3. Absorbs aerodynamic wind forces and road shocks through the suspensions. 4. Absorbs the major Energy of impact in the event of an accident.
