ADMINISTRATIVE NARRATIVE OF OBSERVATION:

According the lesson plan that had been provided to me earlier, the focus of this session was the interpretation of periodontal disease, trauma and periapical lesions. When I arrived, the lecture had just begun, a PowerPoint presentation was running, and Margo was reviewing concepts from previous sessions. She emphasized the importance of both clinical assessment and radiography. Margo described bone loss, and the students brought up the topic of the Sonicare toothbrush for discussion. Margo connected their questions to real-life situations. She then passed around several dentoforms and introduced a hand-on activity students were to determine the amount of CAL on the dentoform. Margo walked around the class, and students demonstrated various levels of periodontal disease on the dentoform. There were not enough dentoforms for all the tables. Some students did not have an opportunity to participate in this exercise, because the students who had the dentoforms did not share them. The lecture then continued with pictures and videos to reinforce the concepts. Margo also showed slides with various stages of disease and introduced the students to valuable online resources. During the lecture, students were attentive and asked questions to further their understanding. The class ended at 11:50, and Margo assured the students she would address unanswered questions when they were in the clinic later that afternoon. Keep doing: Directing students to online resources to enhance learning Using hand-on learning and videos to augment the experience and address the various learning styles Engaging the students in the learning process Consider: Have/tell students work in groups when there arent enough dentoforms (or any teaching aids) to go around Editing the presentation so the entire sentence is displayed instead of parts at a time Repeating student questions/comments for the benefit of those in the back

Good job Margo!
