Determiners: This, That, These and Those

This used when referring to one object/person that is close in distance/time Example: This plant here has lobed leaves. This is the first time I am eating durian. (happening now) That used when referring to one object/person that is far in distance/time Example: Pass me that book over there please. (far in distance) That was the last time I saw him. (happened in the past) These used when referring to more than one object/person that are close in distance/time Example: These letters in my hand are addressed to you. (close to the speaker) With the advent of emails and smses, hardly anyone sends handwritten letters these days. Those used when referring to more than one object/person that are far in distance/time Example: Those boys playing in the field over there are my neighbours. So many years have passed but I can still vividly recall those days of catching guppies as a young boy.
