Drug name/ generic name Oxytocin Pitocin Mechanism of action Stimulates the uterus, especially the gravid uterus just before parturition & causes myoepithelium of the lacteal glands to contract, which results in milk injecting to women. Indications Postpartum: to produce uterine contraction during the third stage of labor and to control postpartum bleeding/ hemorrhage. Antepartum: to initiate or improve uterine contraction to achieve early vaginal delivery. Relief of moderate pain. Adverse reaction/ side effects CV: cardiac arrhythmias HPN Fetal: fetal bradycardia Nursing responsibilities >monitor FHR

Classification: Hormone, oxytocic Mefenamic acid

Anti-inflammatory and analgesic. Mechanism of action are not known

CNS: headache, insomnia, dizziness GI: nausea, diarrhea, vomiting Hematologic: bleeding

>asses for any history of allergy to mefenamic acid, aspirin allergy >instruct patient to take with meals to decrease stomach upset. >notify physician if with swelling in the ankles of fingers: black tarry stool, severe diarrhea. >take drug on an empty stomach with water >give drug with meal if GI upset occurs >warm patient that stool may be dark or green

Dolfenal

Classification: NSAID Ferrous sulfate Elecates the serum iron concentration, which then helps to form HgB Prevention and treatment of iron deficiency anemia Dietary supplement of iron

GU: renal impairment

CNS: CNS toxicity, acidosis, coma and death with overdose GI: GI upset, constipation, diarrhea, dark stools

Fer-gen-sol

Classification: Iron preparation Cephalexin Drozid Classification: Bactericidal: inhibits synthesis of bacterial cell wall, causing cell death GU infections caused by E. coli CNS: headache, dizziness, paresthesia GI: nausea, vomiting, flatulence abdominal pain

>ask for any history of allergy to penicillin, cephalosporin >instruct patient to take with meals to decrease stomach upset.

Antibiotic, cephalosporin(first generation)

GU: nephrotoxicity Hematology: bone marrow depression

>advise to take the full course of this drug. >notify physician if with severe diarrhea with blood, unusual bleeding or bruising. Administer per Orem

Vitamin A Aquasol A

For treatment of vitamin A deficiency
