Definition

A research problem refers to some difficulty which a researcher experiences in the context of either a theoretical or practical situation and wants to obtain a solution for the same.

Conditions where Research Problem exist

There must be an individual or a group or an organisation. There must be at least two courses of action. There must be at least two possible outcomes. The choice of action must have unequal efficiencies for the desired outcomes.

Components Of Research Problem

There must be an individual or a group which has some difficulty. There must be some objectives to be attained at. There must be alternative means for obtaining the objectives. There must remain some doubt in the mind of a researcher with regard to the selection of alternatives.

Components Of Research Problem

There must be some environment to which the difficulty pertains.

Selecting The Problem

Subject which is overdone should not be normally chosen. Controversial subject should not become the choice of an average researcher. Too narrow or too vague problems should be avoided. The subject selected for research should be familiar and feasible.

Selecting The Problem

The importance of the subject, the qualifications and the training of a researcher, the costs involved, the time factor are few other criteria. The selection of a problem must be preceded by a preliminary study.

Necessity Of Defining The Problem

A problem clearly stated is a problem half solved The problem to be investigated must be defined so that relevant data can be discriminated from irrelevant ones. Infact, formulation of a problem is often more important than its solution.

Technique Involved In Defining A Problem

Statement of a problem in a general way in social research pilot survey should be undertaken. Understanding the nature of problem Surveying the available literature

Technique Involved In Defining A Problem

Developing ideas through discussion Rephrasing the research problem

Conclusion
Task of defining a research problem, very often follows a sequential pattern Problem is stated in a general way, the ambiguities are resolved
