    Biblical Name of the Philippines

    Ophir is a port or region mentioned in the Bible, famous for its wealth. King Solomon is supposed to have received a cargo of gold, silver, sandalwood, precious stones, ivory, apes and peacocks from Ophir, every three years. Ophir in Genesis 10 (the Table of Nations) is said to be the name of one of the sons of Joktan.

Jes Tirol asserts that this group of islands could not be Japan because the Moluccans did not get there, nor Taiwan, since it is not composed of "many islands."     Another theory is by Fr. Francisco Collin SJ. He claims that the Filipino people were descendants of Tarshish. Tarshish, a Sanscrit or Aryan word, meaning: the sea coast. Tarshish is a son of Javan, as well as a descendant of Japhet. For those who take the genealogies of Genesis to be historically accurate, Japheth is commonly believed to be the father of the Europeans. The link between Japheth and the Europeans stems from Genesis 10:5, which states," By these were the isles of the Gentiles divided in their lands. Since we are not Europeans, therefore this theory is impossible. Ophir, for some historians is the one who fit the description of the Philippines.
