Council nds states new reworks law too vague, lacking restrictions
Law doesnt address local jurisdiction regarding noise issues

Changes in state law have left the city of Milan with little choice but to approve deregulated fireworks rules earlier this month. The new law supersedes city ordinances regarding discharge and noise. Since the state law has been in effect since Jan. 1, the council decided against making it an emergency ordinance. The new law allows people to use fireworks anytime on the day before, day of and day after a national holiday. The city can still enforce zoning and permit regulations on people operating a fireworks stand. The holidays listed are New Years, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents Day, Washingtons Birthday Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. The citys ordinance prohibits the discharge of pyrotechnics except for those days. The law is vague on local jurisdiction such as noise ordinances and time restrictions,

So far, that has meant hiring a local man to create some commercials and an infomercial as a way to sell the town to others through the citys website. The city of Milan needs a new brand, an image on which it can build campaigns to promote itself to the outside world, officials said. But recognizing the city cant do it alone, one member of the City Council wants to reach out to other local groups to see if there is interest in a more broad-based effort. To that end, the council gave its blessing to Mayor Pro-Tem Michael Armitage to recruit others in making a new image for the city.

The city of Milan may have to decide soon if it wants to be a part of a countywide transportation system. The Ann Arbor Transit Authority is looking to create a countywide system and has been meeting with representatives of various communities to gauge interest. The program is known as Moving You Forward. The proposal calls for improvements to existing transportation systems in Washtenaw
