Background
Since its foundation in 2008, the YIN developed into a strong democratic platform for peers, counting roughly 60 members at the beginning of 2011. The members are meeting on a monthly basis and develop solutions for their common challenges by jointly organizing their interests and sharing their interdisciplinary knowledge and diverse experiences. While key competences such as leadership, communication skills or didactics are not professionally trained in a typical scientic career, the joint program of leadership management and didactics is individually matched with the requirements of personal advanced training for each YIN member. In addition, most junior research group leaders and junior professors will only stay with the KIT for a limited time. However, this particular period is crucial for their further scientic career. During this time, they have to develop an independent and individual prole. This denes another goal of the YIN, as the network provides information and help for the peers in order to use their time at KIT in a productive and sustainable manner.
Organization
The network is self-governing. The YIN member assembly decides democratically. Chair and vice-chairs are elected to represent YIN and the interests of its members within the KIT and in public. Mandated by the YIN members, the nancial board executes budgeting and allocation of funds and has to report to the assembly. Additional committees manage the alumni network and arrange public events, meetings and further activities to create a platform where YIN and its members research groups can be promoted. Administrative staff and assistance is provided by the KIT.
