Honors Mentor Connection Application Process

Begin by going to the Honors Mentor Connection website at http://www.district287.org/HMC. The Honors Mentor Connection page has a link at the bottom to information about the HMC Application Process Complete and submit the HMC Interest Form online. As soon as that form is received, we can register your interest and open a file to receive the other parts of your application. Produce your Rsum using MS Word or your word processing program, including the valuable features of spell check and grammar check. A guide for rsum writing is available on the website if you need one. Proof read. Submit your rsum as soon as it is ready, either as an attachment to an email you send to d@dwelch.org or by regular mail to the address below. Write the two short essays. Use your word processing program, including the valuable features of spell check and grammar check. Proof read. Get signatures of approval as indicated on the document, and send it by regular mail to the address below. How to Submit Application documents: HMC Interest Form is submitted online to initiate the process. Other parts are submitted as completed. Be sure your name appears prominently on all documents. Rsum (typed, one page, 10 pt. font) Two short essays (typed, one page for both, 10 pt. font) The permissions document is the only part of the application that must be mailed by you. We must have the original signatures. The transcript is mailed by your guidance office. You should supply them with stamped addressed envelopes whenever you request that they send out a transcript. Letters of Recommendation may be mailed or submitted online by the writer. If they plan to mail it, you supply the stamped, addressed envelope.

All Honors Mentor Connection applicants will be invited to an interview. The committee will interview students in groups of five or six. When you receive notice of the interview, confirm the date and time by email. If you must make a change, call as early as possible for the best options.

Guide to Writing Letters of Recommendation


You are being asked to write a Letter of Recommendation for a student who is seeking an opportunity for individualized study in the Honors Mentor Connection (HMC) program. Please type your letter because it will be a part of the information sent to a prospective mentor if this student is selected for participation in Honors Mentor Connection. You may submit it as an attachment to an email you send to d@dwelch.org or by regular mail to the address below.

Selection of Students
Applicants for Honors Mentor Connection must have two Letters of Recommendation addressing the students appropriateness for this individualized advanced learning experience. We are looking for guidance in four areas: Advanced Learning Capacity Independence, advanced vocabulary, strong writing skills, unusually advanced knowledge, quick learning, interest in research, avid reading. Generation of many ideas, skill with abstract ideas, pattern of pursuit of high-level opportunities. Motivation Passion, perseverance, high standards, curiosity, self-advocacy, tenacious learner. Character Ethical, positive, collaborative, dependable, cooperative, Respected by adults and peers, respectful of others Creativity Original thinker, risk taker, visionary, problem solver Imaginative, flexible in new situations Sense of humor, constructive criticism In your recommendation letter, we ask that you address each of the four areas. The descriptors of each area may be helpful to define our concerns. If there is any reservation that you have about the appropriateness of the student, we would appreciate your honest inclusion of that concern.
