COUNCIL ELECTIONS: WARD CANDIDATES OUTLINE WHAT THEY STAND FOR AND WHY YOU SHOULD CAST YOUR VOTE THEIR WAY
VOTERS in Richlands, Jamboree, Tennyson and Parkinson wards will head to the ballot boxes on Saturday. After the 2008 local government elections, the LNP held sway in three wards through victories in Jamboree, Tennyson and Parkinson by Matthew Bourke, Nicole Johnston and Angela OwenTaylor. Ms Johnston, however, has since left the LNP and has served as an independent for most of the term. Labor retained Richlands with Milton Dick winning the ward. But who will win this weekend? To give you a final insight into the campaign credentials of the candidates News journalist James Drew asked each to name three key issues they would focus on if elected. Why should voters elect you? What are your top three election commitments? RICHLANDS WARD RACHEL BICKEL, LNP Im a part of Team Quirk. A vote for me is a vote for a better Richlands. 1. Dealing with traffic congestion by improving traffic flow at the Oxley Rd, Cliveden Ave intersection in Oxley and progressing the stage four upgrade of Progress Rd. 2. Upgrading Eridanus St Park basketball court to full court size and upgrading the dog off-leash area at C.J. Greenfields Park. 3. Supporting community and multicultural festivals. CR MILTON DICK, ALP I will work with Ray Smith to get the priorities right and we will ease the cost of living. 1. Demolishing the old Inala skate rink and delivering new parkland and facilities for families and young people. 2. Fixing Harcourt Rd at Darra, widening its rail bridge and installing new traffic lights. 3. Delivering a $100 rebate for water bills and free off-peak public transport for seniors. JAMBOREE WARD CR MATTHEW BOURKE, LNP We have a clear vision and a united team to deliver for residents. habilitation of Oxley Creek and bridge culverts in Corinda. 3. Extending Corinda library and upgrading library and council services. SHANE McKENNA, ALP Ray Smith and I will put councils funds back into our suburbs and focus on residents. 1. Putting ratepayers money back into footpaths, cycleways, transport, parks and pools. 2. Easing traffic congestion and improving safety on Brisbane roads, including Oxley Rd. 3. Setting up Better Suburbs Boards to give residents a say. CARON MENASHE, THE GREENS We believe residents concerns should be heard and genuinely considered in any council decision which impacts on them. 1. Improving Brisbanes public transport system in terms of reliability and efficiency. 2. Understanding and addressing environmental concerns in Tennyson Ward. 3. Bringing runaway big development under control. PARKINSON WARD CR ANGELA OWEN-TAYLOR, LNP I will continue to work hard to keep delivering improvements for Parkinson Ward. 1. Building a Forest Lake Community Hub. 2. Continuing to improve local parks, bikeways and public transport. 3. Upgrading Stapylton Rd between Wadeville St and Logan Motorway. RACHEL GALLAGHER, ALP I understand the areas issues and will fight to ensure the Parkinson Ward community is looked after. 1. Upgrading the Nottingham and Algester roads intersection 2. Rolling out new safety road markings in all school zones in the ward, including Forest Lake, Algester and Pallara state schools. 3. Free public transport for seniors during off-peak travel times.

1. Delivering a kiosk at Rocks Riverside Park to make it more family-friendly. 2. Building an environmental centre at Pooh Corner, Wacol, for environmental education. 2. Improving traffic congestion by delivering more buses and $3 million worth of road resurfacing works in the ward. FRAN BELL, ALP I am a small business owner and I care about making a difference. 1. Reducing councils waste and debt. 2. Installing a better suburbs board of community representatives.

3. Free off-peak travel for seniors on buses and ferries. JOS HALL, THE GREENS A vote for the Greens is a vote for your children and grandchildren. 1. Giving every household in Brisbane free green waste recycling bins. 2. Introducing quarterly kerbside collection of ewaste. 3. Trialling a minibus service to reduce congestion and improve safety around schools. TENNYSON WARD MATT BRODIE, LNP I will ensure we continue to keep rates low through sensible econ-

omic management. 1. $800,000 to be spent on Corinda Library, which will include a new layout. 2. $60,000 to install water features at Dunlop Park Pool. 3. $1.2 million to be spent on new footpaths in the ward.
