Dignity for the homeless

Context India is a land of mind-numbing contrasts and amidst our growing affluence an increasing number are being left behind there are close to a 100 million homeless individuals in our country - many of them destitute infants and small children. We chose to ignore them or they are often hidden from clear view - behind flashy apartment blocks, in the by-lanes of glitzy commercial districts or in the shadow of luxury hotels. These are the ones who cannot even afford accommodation in an urban slum cluster They emerge out of the darkness at night and huddle under rags and threadbare blankets on the roadside, under a culvert or next to a foul open drain. A sliver of privacy, comfort, safety/ security, protection from insects, a single daily mealthese basics are all rare luxuries for our forgotten homeless masses. This is a section of society known for their light carbon footprint (albeit inadvertent) and their use of materials, born out of extreme poverty, is always wise and mindful. Design Brief To look at the homeless around us, empathize-with and articulate the unique challenges of their unenviable situation, evaluate their needs and emerge with a habitation solutiona simple device or system that can house a homeless person or family at night, provide protection from the elements and disease bearing insects while providing some measure of hygiene and privacy. Most important, the solution should give an identity of dignity and pride to those who have no possessions, nothing to look forward to and nowhere to go.
