Principal Notes From Mr. Lauer
We need your help... Kindergarten Round-Up
We are working to determine just how many kindergarten
students we can expect for next school year. If you have an
incoming kindergarten student in your family and you plan to
have him or her attend Lewis during the 2009 - 2010 school year,
could you please fill out the information form available on our
web site, ( http://lewiselementary.org/kindergarten ) or contact
the school office at 503 916 6360. This will help us in our
planning process. Also if you know of family and friends who plan
to have kindergarten students attend Lewis, could you please
share this information with them.
Kindergarten Round Up Meetings Scheduled
We will be offering two informational meetings for prospective
kindergarten families. Please share this information with family
and friends who might be interested. The dates and times are
listed below:
Tuesday, February 10, 2009 - 9:00 am
or
Thursday, February 26, 2009 - 6:00 pm
Free Reduced Lunch Reminder
If your household has experienced a change in income, your
child(ren) may now qualify for free or reduced priced school
meals. You may apply at any time during the school year if your
household size goes up, if your income goes down, if you lose
your job, if you start getting food stamps or TANF (Temporary
Assistance for Needy Families). You may submit an application
for the first time, or you may reapply if previously denied and
your income has changed.
School meals are nutritious and offer unlimited fruits and
vegetables with every lunch. If your children are not currently
eating school meals it would be an honor to serve them.

Student Medications
Please remember that students who need to take medication at
school must have a form on file signed by the parent/guardian,
and medication brought to school in it's original container
(whether it be a prescription or OTC medication). Please contact
the school office of you have any questions.
ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE WITH COST OF
TRANSPORTATION TO SCHOOL
The Northside and Southside Family Support Centers and the
Enrollment and Transfer Center, in partnership with the
Voluntary Public School Choice grant, are able to offer
transportation assistance to students in the form of bus tickets
and youth bus passes. For more information, please contact Kim

Elizabeth Ordaz 503-916-3205 at the Enrollment and Transfer
Center.
Inclement Weather & Emergency Closures
When school closure decisions are made, the district instantly
publishes the information through their web site at:

Television and radio stations get their
information from this service, but
sometimes their broadcast of updates is
delayed. If you have internet access, the link above is the first
place you should check for weather-related closure information.
The site is available 24 hours a day. This information can also be

Please note, that unless it is pouring down rain, we go out for
recess each day at lunch hour. Please be sure that your child
is dressed appropriately for the weather.

Walk and Bike Update
"Don't forget that tomorrow (Thursday) is Lewis Walk & Bike
Day. We couldn't ask for a better forecast this time of year, so
come a few minutes early for hot cider and get information on
signing up for the new Lewis Walk & Bike punch card" Walk and

Scrip: Upcoming scrip order dates:
Friday, January 23 for delivery on
Thursday, January 29 (after school)
Scrip will also be for sale in the hall by
the office on Friday mornings, from
8:40 until 8:50ish.
Remember, Scrip is an even money exchange; You receive the
same amount of gift cards that you pay for. All proceeds benefit
the Lewis Library. Order forms are available in the office.
Box Tops for Education & Campbell's Soup Labels
We have raised over $500 from collecting Box Tops for Education.
Box Top for Education money is given to Mr. Jamesbarry for our
music program. Campbell's Soup Labels gives us points for sports
equipment. Mr. Woods will be able to choose what he needs for
Physical Education. Information is posted throughout the school
with information and samples of what we need to collect.
Yoga Club
Yoga club registration is still open for grades k-2. I have limited
space, so please sign up in the office if you are interested. Yoga
club for k-2nd grade will be held Wednesday mornings from
8:00-8:40a.m. in the gym starting March 4th. If you have

Family Yoga Night: Friday,
January 23, 2009 - 6:30 - 8:00 pm
Save the date for family fun, laughter and
fitness. Family yoga night will be held at
Lewis Elementary on
Friday, January 23rd. There will be more
details to follow in next week's newsletter.
This is a fundraiser for 4th and 5th grade
OMSI camp, with all proceeds going to help
campers attend camp. If you would like to
offer assistance (night of help), I would greatly appreciate it.

Did your new year's resolutions include being more involved in
your child's school? Don't wait another minute, we need your

hosting a garden work party from 9:00
am-noon. We invite you and your
family to join us in spreading wood
chips on the pathways, building a small
retaining wall for our new greenhouse,
weeding the Butterfly Garden and
cleaning up the Outdoor Center. See
