Mission Bay Cluster Aug 23 Hello MB Cluster Community, I hope everyone has had a lovely summer.

Here is an update on some cluster related issues and a reminder about our first MB Cluster meeting. Budget Update: San Diego Unified and the San Diego Education Association agreed on June 20 on revisions to the 2012-13 school year contract that resulted in the district recalling all 1372 of the K-12 teachers, librarians, counselors and nurses who had received final layoff notices in May. An additional 109 Early Childhood Eduction teachers were recalled under the agreement. In September, our 6 cluster schools will see a full roster of teachers, but if Governor Brown's tax initiative does not pass in November, the loss of 14 days of instructional time is still on the table. Please refer to the district website for more details of the benefits of the tax initiative as described by John Lee Evan, President of the Board of Education. http://www.sandi.net/page/129 Our Board Representative, Scott Barnett, is working with individuals at the District and within the Clusters to develop a plan that is an alternative to the 14 days of lost instruction in case the ballot measure fails. The IB Sustainability Task Force and newly formed MB Cluster/San Diego High IB Development Team met over the summer and are making progress towards securing long term funding for the International Baccalaureate Programs in the District. On August 10, Scott Barnett met with parents at Bayview Terrace to address questions regarding the closure of the school and the transition to the Barnard Chinese MandarinAcademy. Very early in the school year, the Barnard School, currently in the Point Loma Cluster will host families of Bayview Terrace and show them the outstanding programming and present the vision they have for students. The Bayview Terrace families will also be given the opportunity to tour the other MB Cluster schools in the coming year. At the District, Phil Stover and Nellie Myer will be working closely with our Area Superintendent, Mitzi Moreno, to plan the transition. Over the summer the MB Cluster Marketing Task Force met and discussed a marketing plan. There is also an effort to reach out to the business colleges within UCSD, USD, and San Diego State in hopes that a MB Cluster marketing plan might be picked up as a project by an undergraduate or MBA student or

group. The Marketing Task Force needs more input. We will be reaching out for more members to join the marketing team at the first MB Cluster meeting. Please consider helping out this vitally important effort of the MB Cluster! YMCA Executive Director, Vince Glorioso, and a few key community leaders met over the summer to go over the time line for the joint-use YMCA - PB Middle School project. The agreement with the district is being finalized, the market study has begun and the steering committee is being formed. This exciting project is well underway and the goal for an April groundbreaking is within reach. A reminder that the cluster meetings have been moved to the first Thursday of the month (with the exception of 2 scheduling conflict dates). All meetings begin at 6:00pm. Here are the dates and locations of all the Cluster meetings for the year.
