Edgewood Star
Its always a challenge to come up with new ideas to hold childrens interest. but Janice Wingo Phillips, executive director of Edgewood Housing Authority, came through for the climax to another great day camp. Authority children raced around town with taxi drivers and performed tasks that earned them clues to the next location and activity. When all challenges had been met the team ended up at The Phillips house for hot dogs, hamburgers, and swimming. The day ended wilh cold watermelon which Cheatham Methodist Church Pastor Pam Jackson and bus driver Judi Yarbrough provided. This years race featured 4 teams. The blue team of Ashley Phillips, Demiya Warren, and Montriee Warren driven by Denise Williams. won first place which earned them ten dollars each. Second place went to the green team of Saveiun Washington, Austin Phillips, and Kasey Stem. They won five dollars each and were driven by Jan Smith. Other competitors were the red team of Lake Fitzgerald. Rashea Everell. and Hayden Phillips driven by Paul Golleher and the yellow team of Danae Plenty Of Fun Activities Rivers. Kobe Fitzgerald. and Gerald Hemandez, with Pastor Dan Tamo of Grace For Youth Of EHA Bible Fellowship driving. This years challenges included: singing the national anthem at the Exxon station. Pumping a precise amount of gas at Newmans, Finding a 1994 penny at First National Bank. Finding a specific magazine article at the Canton Library, and putting together a map of the United States at Edgewood Pharmacy.. Teamwork was the focus this year. The oldest member of each group dressed in unusual clothes left in a dryer at the Crockett Laundry. (which was really funny because they had to run to a public picnic table for the next clue). A girl from each group had her hair put up in hot curlers and styled by other team members at The Hair Shed. The Post Office challenge consisted of counting all the mail boxes (sounds easier than it is). The youngest member sucked a cup of lell-O down with a straw. The next to the youngest ate numerous cups of Trix cereal at the Senior Citizcns Center until locating the marked cup. This was the sixth season for the popular day camp and according to some participants the funniest. Housing children spent each Thursday in July riding horses. playing games, swimming, and preparing crafts. New activities included making water powered rockets which were shot about fifty feet in the air and sail boats which campers raced in the swimming pool. Felt flower vases.and stained glass hangings were among the crafts created. The children enjoyed making their own snacks including cookie balls, homemade pizza. and coffee can iee cream.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

To: Editor, Edgewood Star, This letter comes to you from a supportive and concerned parent of an Edgewood I.S.D. student. The first day of school is such an exciting time for our kids. An opportunity to meet new friends reconnect with old ones and look forward to starting out fresh again, with hopes, dreams and enthusiasm to achieve a new level of excellence. To my surprise, I received a call about an hour after our Middle School in Edgewood started on Monday. Both of my children as well as other students were called to the office and told that they were out of compliance with the NEW dress code. In addition, they were to call their parents and ask them to bring different clothing or they would be punished by remaining in I.S.S the rest of the day. This was confusing to me and honestly a bit disturbing! What about those students whose parents were unable to bring alternative clothing to them due to their work schedule? Is it reasonable to punish a child because their parents are unable to bring them clothes? Where is this information published for parents to read and be aware of a NEW policy or change to the current one? After reviewing the website, I was unable to find the NEW dress code. Is it hidden somewhere?

Send letters to the Editor 7 to 10 business days ahead of Thursdays 5:00 PM deadline to myewnews@gmail. com. Please include your name and phone number to be considered.

The dress code that I read appears to be the same one that we adhered to last year. As far as I know, my kids were well within compliance of the policy that is currently published. So whats going on exactly? I believe strongly that it is important that our children dress appropriately. If all clothing choices however, are at the discretion of our school district leadership, than wouldnt it be better to simply require a school uniform? I know for myself and many other parents, we could probably save hundreds of dollars each year not to mention the embarrassment and disruption to class time on the first day of school. This is really disappointing and I sincerely hope that a better attempt to communicate with parents will be made from this point forward. In my opinion, this was a waste of time and a negative introduction to what should have been a day we all look forward to. A simple note home or reminder of the new expectations would have been sufficient and a lot less disruptive than the implied impact inappropriate clothing has on our students. Sincerely,Angela Steffen
