Course Description & Objectives: The story of Florida since entering the Union is presented within a national and regional context, and closely examined for its own social, cultural, economic, and political evolution. At a thematic level, we will inquire into the meaning and significance of both growth and development and their impact upon the environment of Florida. Historical thinking and methods will improve analysis and the ability to express ideas orally and in writing. Required Books: 1. Michael Gannon, Florida: A Short History, Revised Edition (at USF Bookstore) 2. Maurice O'Sullivan and Jack C. Lane, eds., The Florida Reader: Visions of Paradise (at USF Bookstore) Additional Resources: 1. Journal articles to choose from for critique assignment are filed under that heading on Blackboard. 2. Rubric for and an example of critique assignment, along with self-assessment form are on Blackboard 3. Key items to study for bi-weekly tests are made available under "Course TEST Notes" on Blackboard. Grades and Assessments: The grade for the course will be determined by performance on four critiques of journal articles, occasional inclass quizzes and activities based on readings, lectures and films, and bi-weekly tests on lectures and the assigned readings. Each of the four article critiques will constitute ten percent of the final grade. The bi-weekly tests will count for thirty percent of the course grade. The remaining thirty percent is based on the in-class quizzes and activities. Late submittals of critiques may be penalized. There will be no make-up of quizzes, activities or bi-weekly tests. There is no provision for extra credit. All grades will be posted on Blackboard (https://my.usf.edu) as soon as they are available, and students should regularly consult Blackboard for announcements and additional resources.

Complete all assigned readings prior to class.


This course will use the plus/minus grading system to report the final overall course average as follows: 97-100=A+ 77-79=C+ 93-96=A 73-76=C 90-92=A70-72=C87-89=B+ 67-69=D+ 83-86=B 80-82=B63-66=D 60-62=D-

It is also certified for the following Dimensions: Critical Thinking, Inquiry-Based Learning, Human Historical Context and Process, and Human and Cultural Diversity. Students enrolled in this course will be asked to participate in the USF General Education assessment effort. This might involve submitting copies of writing assignments for review, responding to surveys, or participating in other measurements designed to assess the FKL Core Curriculum learning outcomes.
