AN INTERDISCIPLINARY PROGRAM

in American Studies is
an interdisciplinary pro-
gram ofering compre-
hensive study in Amer-
ican institutions and
culture. Te basic pro-
gram consists of courses
in American history and
American literature.
Prerequisites for grad-
uate work in American
studies include twen-
ty-one semester hours in
any one or in any combi-
nation of the following
areas: American history,
government, journalism,
literature, and philoso-
phy; history of Ameri-
can education; history
of religion in America;
and American sociologi-
cal problems. Tere is no
foreign language require-
ment. Applicants must
submit a General Re-
cord Examination (GRE)
General Test score; a
GRE score and GPA
predictive of success in
this program are recom-
mended.
Graduate work in Amer-
ican Studies for the Mas-
ter of Arts degree con-
sists of thirty semester
hours, at least ffeen of
which must be in courses
numbered above 5000.

of American institutions
and culture and prepares
students for the world
of practical afairs. Te
basic program consists
of courses in a variety
of areas of study, which
students may combine
according to their cul-
tural and professional
objectives.
Te purpose is to ac-
quaint students with the
intellectual and cultural
development of the na-
tion, to prepare them for
responsible citizenship,
and to show the conti-
nuity of past, present,
and future in acceptable
cultural and historical
terms.
All students electing to
major or minor in Amer-
ican Studies should con-
sult the director before
registering.

3. Twenty-seven semester hours of additional
courses numbered 3000 or above, with no more
than twelve credits from one area such as histo-
ry, political science, or religion, etc. chosen from
the lists below. (Note: Some areas have less than
twelve credits ofered.)
