AS SUMMER COMES TO AN END THE SISTERS OF EPSILON GAMMA PREPARE TO HEAD BACK TO CHAPEL HILL FOR ANOTHER EXCITING YEAR.
With less than three weeks to go before we head back to town, everyone is busy getting in their last few days of sun and fun and while we are not quite ready to hit the books, we are all denitely ready to return to school for Fall Recruitment 2012 - sure to be our best yet! While many of the sisters of Epsilon Gamma had exciting summer plans, in this special Summer edition of Hoots from the Hill, we introduce you to nine Kappas who have traveling, working, interning and studying all around the United States this summer. Veronica Butler (PC 09)

This May Veronica attended the North Carolina Geology Field Camp as part of a capstone course for her major. As soon as classes ended she traveled out to New Mexico with 50 other geology students and professors for a six week long eld course located in northern New Mexico and southern Colorado.

She spent the rst half of her summer learning eld mapping techniques, hiking and camping (sadly there were no smores). Veronica and her group also took day trips to tour abandoned mines and visited the Great Sand Dunes National Park. When Veronica returned North Carolina she had a job as a Resident Assistant for a residential science camp at Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C.

understanding of development efforts worldwide.

One of her projects this summer was to research the role SMEs play in postconict stabilization and reconstruction. This summer, two Kappas reported for duty aboard the USS Kearsarge for four adventurous weeks as part of their training for the Naval Reserve Ofcers Training Corps! During that time, Ali and Esther embarked on a grueling but enriching journey to learn about life on an amphibious assault ship both in port at Norfolk, Virgina and out at sea. Working side by side with the sailors in the ship's Deck Department, their days often started out at 5 a.m., lasted until 5 p.m., and consisted of seemingly endless maintenance and repairs throughout the Kearsarge.

Nothing brings you closer to your Kappa sister than battling broken heads (bathrooms), cold showers, no A/C (in 100+ degrees of heat and humidity!), and long messdeck lines (that is, waiting FOREVER to eat) together. Apart from sweating their hearts out and getting their hands dirty, Ali and Esther had so much fun meeting new people, making new friends, and becoming affectionately known as "baby ensigns" or "Mini-Ma'ams" around the ship.

Orientation Leader for UNC-Chapel Hill.

Riley and Sarah were lucky enough to stay together with a wonderful host family, as well as travel Europe together!

Jackie (second from left) and her fellow Orientation Leaders in from of the Old Well.
While working to develop her personal leadership style, she met hundreds of new faces and helped new students become more comfortable with making the transition to Carolina. She learned a great deal about group dynamics as well as about herself, while representing our fantastic KKG chapter. I also gained unforgettable friendships with my fellow OLs, 20 of the most motivated individuals Ive ever met. I cant wait to bring the skills Ive learned, as well as some very interesting stories, back to my Kappa sisters in the fall, Jackie said.

They visited lavish palaces in Morocco, crossed the Rialto Bridge in Venice, explored the chapels of the Vatican, and kayaked on the river where Christopher Columbus launched his famous expedition! Although speaking Spanish was a little intimidating at times, we gained valuable life experience and made memories that I'm sure we'll never forget, Riley said.

Esther (left) and Ali (right) in Norfolk,VA.

Once the long workweeks were over, they were able to venture off base to enjoy weekends relaxing at Virginia Beach or screaming at the top of their lungs on roller coasters at Busch Gardens! All in all, it was an experience I will never forget, and I am so glad that a Kappa was there to share those memories with me, Esther said.

Riley Craven (PC 11) & Sarah Woronoff (PC 10)

During May and June this summer Riley Craven and Sarah Woronoff studied Spanish in Seville, Spain. For six weeks, they lived with over 50 other Carolina students in the bustling Spanish city, where they worked to improve their language skills and learn about the country's fascinating culture.

New Grad Rebecca Black Takes London

Rebecca (far right), in England with her younger brother and sister.

Hi Kappas! Ive had the wonderful opportunity of living at the beach this summer and working for Sea Island, a ve star resort island off the coast of Georgia. I work as a childrens day camp counselor and I have loved every minute of it! My coworkers are all college students from across the South, and coincidentally all Greek. Even my boss was a Kappa at the University of Georgia! I have had so much fun getting to know them as well as the interesting clientele that come to the resort and beach club for vacation. I love living on an island, but I am looking forward to moving to the Kappa house come August and starting my sophomore year. Happy summer and go Heels! L+L, Meredith

After graduating from UNC-Chapel Hill in May, I was lucky enough to accept a position in London at UNCs Winston House. Five days after graduation I ew to London and started my new life in this incredible city. Since arriving in May I have met with distinguished UNC alumni, attended a planning session with Chancellor Thorp, and am working to re-build the London UNC alumni network. I have even met a Kappa or two at the grocery store or just out in the city! It is refreshing to see not only how global UNCs reach is, but also Kappa Kappa Gammas presence all over the world. My brother (rising rst year at the Wharton School at UPenn) and sister (rising junior at UNC) also came for nine days and we spent time exploring London, Paris, Edinburgh, and St. Andrews. We even made a trip to the Harry Potter Studios, which is by far one of the coolest things in London. It was a nice reminder of home to see them and I am thrilled that I will be returning home to them over the holidays. Also, the Olympic action here has been remarkable and Im lucky to be in London during this time. London is a magical city, but nothing is quite like Chapel Hill. Being a Tar Heel is an unrivaled life experience, as well as being a Kappa! Loyally and cheers from London, Rebecca

Letter from the President

Left to Right: Dana Andersen, S.E. Spencer, Fraternity President Julie Leshay, Lacy Bedol, Renee Montpetit.
Epsilon Gamma was fortunate to receive the House Board Award for a housed chapter, as well as an Honorable Mention for the Recruitment Award on campuses with 10-14 Panhellenic chapters. As if these awards were not enough, two members of our House Board and one member of our Advisory Board were also in attendance in order to further educate the wonderful alumnae who support our chapter. Thanks to all seven women who represented Epsilon Gamma as well as the other EG alumnae we met throughout the week with their wonderful stories and memories!

Hello Kappa alumnae! Being "touched by the eur-de-lis" may sound a little cheesy and clich, but it really is the only way to describe what went down this summer at Kappa Kappa Gammas 69th Biennial Convention in Jacksonville, FL. Upon arrival, the three (soon to be four) actives who made the drive were struck by the sheer number of women, about 1,000 in total, all there to experience the ultimate Kappa event. Of course, there were business meetings and educational seminars which were the cake part of a lovely Kappa cupcake. All four of us learned so much that we hope to bring back to the chapter, and we made some great friends. Shoutout to Lexie Furphy and the Kappas

at UC-Santa Cruz! We were also able to catch up with Leadership Consultant Gracie, as well as make a new friend, Fraternity President Julie Leshay (photo above)!

The time spent at the Hyatt Regency was jam-packed. Mornings were early Loyally, and nights were late, but every S.E. SPENCER moment was lled with all manner of PRESIDENT EPSILON GAMMA Kappa shenanigans. From the CHAPTER, KAPPA KAPPA GAMMA wonderful museum exhibit honoring Kappas past to the Kappa Marketplace and Blue Owl Boutique where all of us bought enough Kappa swag to last us at least a few months until we start cranking out tshirts again, Convention offered us all an opportunity FOLLOW US ON TWIT TER! to expand our Kappa network and strengthen our passion for the incredible tradition that we hold so dear.
